Microsoft's Nadella talks about how artificial intelligence can be used for good
Artificial intelligence (AI) is making its way from science fiction to reality, in applications like self-driving cars, personal AI systems like Cortana, Siri, and Google Assistant, and home assistants like Amazon's Alexa and Google Home. AI is also under some pressure from people who fear its impact on society in terms of privacy and job security. A number of efforts are underway to both ensure that AI is developed with society's concerns in mind and to help assuage those concerns as more and more people are exposed to AI in their daily lives. Today, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke about a number of AI concerns during an interview at the DLD conference in Munich, as Bloomberg reports. Microsoft is, of course, one of the leaders in applying AI in real-life applications, and so far the company is focusing on how AI can help make us more productive.

A cloud of 3D-printed drones big enough to bring down the latest U.S. stealth fighter, the F35, was just one of the combat scenarios evoked in a discussion of the future of warfare at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday. Much of the discussion focused on the changes computers are bringing to the battlefield, including artificial intelligence and autonomous systems--but also the way the battlefield is coming to computing, with cyberwar, and social media psyops an ever more real prospect. Former U.S. Navy fighter pilot Mary Cummings, now director of the Humans and Autonomy Lab at Duke University, delivered the first strike. "The barrier to entry to drone technology is so low that everyone can have one, and if the Chinese go out and print a million copies of a drone, a very small drone, and put those up against an F35 and they go into the engine, you basically obviate what is a very expensive platform," she said. Drones could not only defeat the F35, on which the U.S. is spending what Cummins called "a ridiculous amount of money," but also replace them, she said.

Microsoft is looking to put Cortana front and center on Android, as a new update will add the AI assistant to your lockscreen. The update is currently in beta, so while it isn't available to all users yet, it should be arriving sometime in the next few weeks. Of course, if you're a beta tester for the Cortana app, you can get this extra functionality right now, but everyone else will have to wait. Cortana will function just like any other lockscreen shortcut. Once you allow it to take up residence there, you'll see a Cortana icon appear near the bottom.

The CIA has revealed details of its "Project Star Gate" mission to develop psychic abilities for the first time. The revelations come as part of a huge dump of documents – almost 12 million in all – that are being made available on the internet. Soft Robot Hugs Your Heart to Keep It Pumping
Three years later, they emerge with a funnel-shaped robot that enfolds the mammalian heart, then actively compresses and twists it to restore normal blood flow after heart failure. Okay, so that's not how it actually happened, but the robot is real. Today, a team of researchers at Harvard University and Boston Children's Hospital, among other participating institutions, published details on an implantable, soft-robotic device that could help failing hearts pump blood without ever touching the blood. The work, including a proof-of-concept experiment with live pigs, was published this week in Science Translational Medicine. Traditional ventricular assist devices (VADs) are used to bypass a failing heart.
