Artificial intelligence creates 3D hearts to predict patient survival
Machine-learning has predicted death risk in people with serious heart disease faster and more accurately than current methods. New software, developed by scientists at Imperial College London, has created virtual 3D hearts of each patient that replicate the way the organ contracts with each beat. Artificial intelligence is able to rapidly learn which features of cardiac function best predict heart failure and death. The system uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the heart together with information from blood tests and other observations. The technology has been tested on patients with pulmonary hypertension, a condition that leads to heart failure if not treated appropriately.
Delivery Bots Start Rolling Down the Streets of U.S. Cities
Autonomous delivery bots have hit the streets in Washington, D.C., and Redwood City, California, the first two U.S. cities to give the thumbs up to a test run by robotics startup Starship Technologies. According to Recode, the robots started making food deliveries on behalf of Postmates and DoorDash beginning Wednesday. The robots cruise the sidewalk at 4 mph and navigate using nine cameras, GPS, and artificial intelligence software. They are designed to constantly relay information about their route to the entire fleet, allowing them to travel more efficiently over time. According to the company, the bots can traverse curbs and small rocks, and they're smart enough to avoid people and animals.

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Open markets and global trade have been blamed for job losses over the last decade, but global CEOs say the real culprits are increasingly machines. And while business leaders gathered at the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos relish the productivity gains technology can bring, they warned this week that the collateral damage to jobs needs to be addressed more seriously. From taxi drivers to healthcare professionals, technologies such as robotics, driverless cars, artificial intelligence and 3-D printing mean more and more types of jobs are at risk. Adidas, for example, aims to use 3-D printing in the manufacture of some running shoes. "Jobs will be lost, jobs will evolve and this revolution is going to be ageless, it's going to be classless and it's going to affect everyone," said Meg Whitman, chief executive of Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
