World's first commercial flying car is now on sale

A Dutch vehicle manufacturer has made flying cars commercially available for the first time ever. PAL-V has created the Liberty Sport and Liberty Pioneer, a pair of two-person three-wheelers capable of flying at speeds of up to 112mph. The Sport is the cheaper of the two, with the base model starting at $400,000. The Pioneer, meanwhile, comes in at $600,000. The phone, originally released in 2000 and in many ways beginning the modern age of mobiles, will be sold as a way of getting lots of battery life in a nearly indestructible body. The new incarnation of the old 3310 will be sold for just €59, and so likely be pitched as a reliable second phone to people who fondly remember it the first time around. It will be revealed at Mobile World Congress later this month, according to leaker Evan Blass who first revealed the details. Last year, Google's DeepMind AI beat Lee Sedol at Go, a strategy game like chess, but orders of magnitude more complicated. The win was a remarkable step forward for the field of artificial intelligence, but it got Roger Melko, a physicist at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, thinking about how neural networks--a type of AI modeled after the human brain--might be used to solve some of the toughest problems in quantum physics. Indeed, intelligent machines may be necessary to solve these problems. "The thing about quantum physics is it's highly complex in a very precise mathematical sense. A big problem we face when we study these quantum systems [without machine learning] is how to deal with this complexity," Melko told me.

Giving cyber security a voice: IBM's Watson - Information Age

Watson, IBM's AI supercomputer, now has the ability to investigate security events and create new services for building cognitive security operation centres. And it now has the capability to allow customers and analysts to interact with Watson through voice and chat regarding cyber security concerns. According to IBM, Watson can now help security analysts parse thousands of natural language research reports that have never before been accessible to modern security tools. For the past year, Watson has been trained on the language of cyber security with over one million security documents, and has been tested with over 40 clients and channel partners including the Ireland based partner Smarttech and Avnet. IBM claims it is the industry's first augmented intelligence technology designed to power cognitive security operations centers (SOCs).

Theoretical physicists from ETH Zurich deliberately misled intelligent machines, and thus refined the process of machine learning. They created a new method that allows computers to categorize data--even when humans have no idea what this categorization might look like. When computers independently identify bodies of water and their outlines in satellite images, or beat the world's best professional players at the board game Go, then adaptive algorithms are working in the background. Programmers supply these algorithms with known examples in a training phase: images of bodies of water and land, or sequences of Go moves that have led to success or failure in tournaments. Similarly to how our brain nerve cells produce new networks during learning processes, the special algorithms adapt in the learning phase based on the examples presented to them.
