I want to talk to you today about the concerns of Non-Equilibrium Information Dynamics and how an understanding of its features lead us to a better intuition about Deep Learning systems or learning systems in general. Since the early 2000s, the cost of sequencing a human genome -- determining the precise order of nucleotides within DNA molecules that defines who we are -- has dropped sharply. A genome that cost $100m to sequence in 2001 can today be sequenced for roughly $1,000. This plummeting cost, along with the shortened timescales for sequencing DNA, has led to a revolution in biotechnology: gene hacking, or the ability to turn genes on and off, and to manipulate biology to our advantage. The most radical branch of this new technology is "gene editing" -- a process by which our DNA code can be cut and pasted using molecular "scissors" for a variety of applications, including curing diseases such as cancers and HIV. A seven-year-old girl from Hereford who penned a letter to Google asking for a job, was delighted to receive a personal response from the chief executive himself. Chloe Bridgewater sent a handwritten letter to the tech giant in which she noted her computer skills and her interest in working in a place where she can "sit on bean bags and go down slides". The letter, first published by Business Insider, makes a pretty solid case for hiring Ms Bridgewater. She wrote in it that she is experienced in tablet usage, computer robot games, swimming, spelling, reading, and sums. She even provided reference: "My teachers tell my mum and dad that I am very good in class."
Boards must enshrine digital mind-set
Tech revolution in business and governance is under way. More boards are responding to the challenge of digital disruption by recruiting directors with specialist tech backgrounds. But this is not enough on its own and could be counter-productive if boards have directors who lack general governance skills. Directors must ask how they can ensure a digital mindset across their organisation and combine digital thinking with critical board tasks such as executive pay, succession planning, strategy governance, corporate reputation and risk management. Rather than trying to predict threats and opportunities, boards must know their organisation can adapt to any tech-related challenge, and that it has the right people, a culture of lifelong learning, and an ethos that thrives on change.

Aircraft maker Airbus is turning to smart industrial drones, data analytics and machine learning to make aircraft inspections easier and faster. One day while working on a shiny new Airbus A350 aircraft, Ronie Gnecco figured it was time to build a better relationship between drones and passenger airplanes. His bold idea to use flying robots for aircraft safety inspections worked so well it has -- among other projects -- it inspired aircraft manufacturer Airbus to move deeper into the industrial drone revolution. Within a couple of years, the company's intelligent unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) systems could be used for safety inspections at airports around the world, making planes safer with more on-time flight departures. To make that happen, Gnecco said it will require pioneering efforts from technology experts, regulators and airport authorities from around the world.

Dyson is expanding its footprint in Singapore, with a new Technology Centre opened today by the maker of vacuums and other smart home electronics. The UK company will be investing $561 million as part of its commitment to the new facility, which hosts working labs where research and development teams can pool their cumulative hardware and software know-how to help advance the company's growing ambitions. If you're only passingly familiar with Dyson's work, you might be wondering what a company that makes vacuums needs with a half-million dollar tech facility with a focus the company says is on "artificial intelligence, machine learning and software development. But Dyson has always emphasized its tech edge in the domestic cleaning hardware market, and it's only doing more to push that advantage lately, including more work in robotics, computer visions systems and machine learning with products like its Dyson 360 Eye robot vacuum. As you can see from the photos of the facility, the company also put a lot of engineering work into one of its most recent products, the Supersonic hair dryer.
