There is an urgent need to expand the AI epistemic community beyond the specific geographies in which it is currently clustered. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer the subject of science fiction and is profoundly transforming our daily lives. While computers have already been mimicking human intelligence for some decades now using logic and if-then kind of rules, massive increases in computational power are now facilitating the creation of'deep learning' machines i.e. algorithms that permit software to train itself to recognise patterns and perform tasks, like speech and image recognition, through exposure to vast amounts of data. These deep learning algorithms are everywhere, shaping our preferences and behaviour. Facebook uses a set of algorithms to tailor what news stories an individual user sees and in what order.

Visualizing high-dimensional data has been a focus in data analysis communities for decades, which has led to the design of many algorithms, some of which are now considered references (such as t-SNE for example). In our era of overwhelming data volumes, the scalability of such methods have become more and more important. In this work, we present a method which allows to apply any visualization or embedding algorithm on very large datasets by considering only a fraction of the data as input and then extending the information to all data points using a graph encoding its global similarity. We show that in most cases, using only $\mathcal{O}(\log(N))$ samples is sufficient to diffuse the information to all $N$ data points. In addition, we propose quantitative methods to measure the quality of embeddings and demonstrate the validity of our technique on both synthetic and real-world datasets.

I would like to thank the European Parliament for the invitation to speak at this seminar on a topic which is at the heart of the European Commission's activities, especially those of the Directorate-General I represent, DG Connect. Let me first state that we greatly appreciate and welcome the publication of the report of the European Parliament Legal Affairs Committee. Given the great public attention currently devoted to robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) this report is very timely and points at some crucial issues that need to be addressed. It highlights the opportunities robotics and AI offer and points towards the clear need for a coherent European approach and for Europe to have a strong presence and investment in this technology in order to maintain leadership in it. Many aspects of the report are directly in line with the Digitising European Industry strategy we launched in April 2016.

When a coworker says she's spending the weekend painting, most people assume she's painting her house. That innate talent is something artificial intelligence (AI) designers built into the Pikazo app, which allows mobile phone shutterbugs to fuse their photos with masterpiece patterns to create unique pieces of digital art.

A toddler meanders unsteadily through the living room, pausing by a sleek black cylinder in the corner. "Alexa," he says in a high-pitched voice. The cylinder acknowledges the request, despite the muffled pronunciation, and the music starts. Alexa, a cloud-based speech recognition software from Amazon and the brain of its black cylindrical loudspeaker Echo, has been a big hit around the world – except for the younger ones, who take it for granted. Children will grow up alongside it, just as Alexa will evolve, as the AI powering it learns to answer more and more questions, and – perhaps – one day even converses freely with people.

"If somebody like Google or Apple announced tomorrow that they had made [AI android] Ava, we would all be surprised, but we wouldn't be that surprised." Imagine a smart robot performing delicate surgery under the control of a surgeon. Or an artificial intelligence (AI) machine mapping genomic sequences to identify the link to Alzheimer's disease. Or psychiatrists applying AI in natural language processing systems on the voices of patients to assess their risk of suicide. You don't have to imagine anymore, because all of this is happening right now.

In a new resolution, members of the European Parliament have proposed EU Commission rules governing robotics and artificial intelligence. The proposed rules will focus on issues of liability, the impact of robots on the workforce, a code of ethical conduct for developers, and the establishment of a European Agency for robotics and artificial intelligence. Liability issues are of growing concern, with MEPs pointing specifically to issues surrounding the growing market in self-driving cars. They have called for mandatory insurance and a supplementary fund to ensure compensation for victims of accidents involving autonomous vehicles. In the resolution, MEPs also stated a concern that the growing adoption of robots in the workforce could cause labor market disruption and proposed a'robot tax' on companies adopting robots to replace human workers.

Current research projects show that artificial intelligence (AI) can help us solving global problems for the greater good of mankind. Despite the headlines presenting crashes involving self-driving cars, the applications of AI technology in this area could dramatically reduce injuries and deaths on the roads. Self-driving cars could also change our lifestyles. Thanks to this emerging technology, we will have more time to entertain ourselves of work during commutes. The decreased cognitive load and the increased comfort provided by shared transportation and self-driving may also affect where people choose to live.

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and world's richest man, said in an interview Friday that robots that steal human jobs should pay their fair share of taxes. "Right now, the human worker who does, say, $50,000 worth of work in a factory, that income is taxed and you get income tax, Social Security tax, all those things," he said. "If a robot comes in to do the same thing, you'd think that we'd tax the robot at a similar level." Gates made the remark during an interview with Quartz. He said robot taxes could help fund projects like caring for the elderly or working with children in school.
