This week I've been immersing myself in all things connected as IBM opened the doors to their stunning new Watson IoT Center Munich. Actually, IoT doesn't go far enough – they call it the Genius of Things. We live in a time when a connected kettle can sit on the same network as our telephone, television, baby monitor, washing machine and every light bulb in the house. In theory, a chain of events can occur when we pull into our smartwatch-sensing garage in our connected car, unlock our smart-door and enter our digital domain, or'home' as it used to be known. Currently, Artificial Intelligence isn't that intelligent and we haven't handed over the reigns just yet because they're not all playing nice.

London (CNN)My first encounter at "Robots," a new exhibition at the Science Museum in London, was with an animatronic baby. It is unquestionably life-like and perfectly baby-sized, safety-pinned into a crisp white nappy and hanging upright on a wall. Every detail -- the latex skin, the mat of baby black hair -- seemed as realistic as a Ron Mueck sculpture. The left arm rose slowly, the mouth half-open, the eyelids flickering into a squint. I studied it intensely, half expecting a response -- a cry, a gurgle -- but without any desire to rescue the baby from the wall and cradle it. Side on, it was unmistakably a machine.

An army of airborne drones and helium balloons will soon be used to bring mobile phone signal to remote parts of the UK. The UK's largest mobile phone group EE said their airborne devices will be able to deliver 4G data on demand to fix so-called mobile'notspots'. Customers will be able to request a balloon that would provide them with mobile signal for major events or help connect them in the wake of natural disasters. EE are also deploying a fleet of Rapid Response Vehicles (RRV) with antenna that will help emergency services when the power goes down. EE will be using drones and helium balloons to deliver 4G to the remotest parts of the UK.

Android users attempting to access Pornhub on their smartphones are being tricked into downloading malicious software. Cybercriminals have started disguising ransomware as the official Pornhub app, according to new research from security firm ESET. Rather than providing access to the site's library of adult content, these programs proceed to lock unsuspecting users out of their handsets, demanding a payout of $100 for their release. The Intelligence Explosion, an original drama published by the Guardian, is obviously a work of fiction. But the fears behind it are very real, and have led some of the biggest brains in artificial intelligence (AI) to reconsider how they work. The film dramatises a near-future conversation between the developers of an "artificial general intelligence" – named Günther – and an ethical philosopher. Günther himself (itself?) sits in, making fairly cringeworthy jokes and generally missing the point. It shows an event which has come to be known in the technology world as the "singularity": the moment when an artificial intelligence that has the ability to improve itself starts doing so at exponential speeds.

They give new tools to the powerful and their challengers. In the Syrian city of Aleppo, the struggle to frame the conflict for the international community ran parallel to the battle for control over the land itself. While drone footage from Russia Today showed videos of rebel-held and heavily-bombed eastern Aleppo, Syria's Ministry of Tourism published footage of the city's intact western half, complete with the soundtrack from HBO's hit show Game of Thrones. Life with the regime was normal. Life with the rebels was hell.

IBM's Watson AI and IoT-fuelled supercomputer finally has the role it was born for, as it is now being recruited to tackle cybercrime. Since it was first presented to the world as a contestant on the gameshow Jeopardy!, IBM Watson has evolved 10-fold. From its new internet of things (IoT) headquarters in Munich, it is being used not only to develop the brains for future autonomous vehicles, but also to influence decision-making, from healthcare to smart cities. Now, similar to the Dr Watson character in the legendary Sherlock Holmes books, IBM Watson is to be recruited to solve crimes – specifically, cybercrimes. Over the past year, Watson has been trained in the language of cybersecurity, ingesting more than 1m security documents.

Long-time Weiss Multi-Strategy Advisors executive Rick Doucette is reportedly planning to launch a new hedge fund with former UBS prime brokerage specialist Gerry Polizzi. The new fund will be a multi-strategy vehicle named Antecapio Investment Partners, according to a Reuters article citing the two men. Doucette left $1.4 billion Weiss, where he was COO as well as president of holding company George Weiss Associates, at the end of last year. Polizzi, meanwhile, was with UBS's prime brokerage operation since 2002 and had previous stints at Credit Suisse and Pershing. The new firm will utilize of both quantitative and discretionary trading strategies, according to Polizzi's LinkedIn profile, as well as incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning in its investment processes.

Three months ago, Google announced it would in early 2017 launch support for high-end graphics processing units (GPUs) for machine learning and other specialized workloads. It's now early 2017 and, true to its word, Google today officially made GPUs on the Google Cloud Platform available to developers. As expected, these are Nvidia Tesla K80 GPUs, and developers will be able to attach up to eight of these to any custom Compute Engine machine. These new GPU-based virtual machines are available in three Google data centers: us-east1, asia-east1 and europe-west1. Every K80 core features 2,496 of Nvidia's stream processors with 12 GB of GDDR5 memory (the K80 board features two cores and 24 GB of RAM).
