Study reveals bot-on-bot editing wars raging on Wikipedia's pages
For many it is no more than the first port of call when a niggling question raises its head. Found on its pages are answers to mysteries from the fate of male anglerfish, the joys of dorodango, and the improbable death of Aeschylus. But beneath the surface of Wikipedia lies a murky world of enduring conflict. A new study from computer scientists has found that the online encyclopedia is a battleground where silent wars have raged for years. Since Wikipedia launched in 2001, its millions of articles have been ranged over by software robots, or simply "bots", that are built to mend errors, add links to other pages, and perform other basic housekeeping tasks.

This tiny camera could give drones predator vision
From body parts to supercars, the family of 3D printed products just keeps expanding. But in a study published last week in Science Advances, scientists think small: German researchers 3D printed different lenses--each smaller than the width of a human hair--onto a chip. Such micro-cameras could be perfect for tiny drones and other pint-sized robots. "Our system is the only one in the world [where] you can put different optic systems on one imaging sensor that is very small," says study author Alois Herkommer, an applied physicist at the University of Stuttgart in Stuttgart, Germany. "The advantage of doing this by 3D printing is that each of these lenses can be different," says Herkommer.
SpaceX makes good on space station delivery a little late
SpaceX made good on a 250-mile-high delivery at the International Space Station on Thursday, after fixing a navigation problem that held up the shipment a day. Everything went smoothly the second time around as the station astronauts captured the SpaceX Dragon cargo ship as the two craft sailed over Australia. On Wednesday, a GPS system error prevented the capsule from getting close enough to be grabbed by the station's big robot arm. SpaceX's Dragon cargo ship is captured by astronauts at the International Space Station on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017, a day after a GPS problem prevented the capsule from coming too close Everything was going well with this latest SpaceX flight until the GPS issue on Wednesday. The Dragon's computers halted the rendezvous from just seven-tenths of a mile away.

Scientists have created a new breed of super pigs resistant to a killer virus that could make the GM meat common in Britain, despite fears over'Frankenstein food'. Scientists at Roslin Institute, which cloned Dolly the Sheep, have used gene-editing to protect pigs from a respiratory condition which costs the UK farming industry millions every year. Scientists at Scotland's Roslin Institute used gene-editing techniques to create GM pigs potentially resilient to the virus Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) which costs the industry billions each year Experts trying to combat world hunger are already calling for the British Government to back the use of GM farm animals. The US has paved the way by approving a salmon engineered to grow twice as fast as normal, which less than 18 months ago became the first GM animal ruled safe to eat.
Bees learn to play golf and show off how clever they really are
Bumblebees have learned to push a ball into a hole to get a reward, stretching what was thought possible for small-brained creatures. Plenty of previous studies have shown that bees are no bumbling fools, but these have generally involved activities that are somewhat similar to their natural foraging behaviour. For example, bees were able to learn to pull a string to reach an artificial flower containing sugar solution. Bees sometimes have to pull parts of flowers to access nectar, so this isn't too alien to them. So while these tasks might seem complex, they don't really show a deeper level of learning, says Olli Loukola at Queen Mary University of London, an author of that study.

Currently vehicles on the roads are classified between Level 2 and 3, however Tesla and other companies have been experimenting with Level 4 & 5 vehicles, with hopes of bringing these to the roads in the near future.
Fighting Words Not Ideas: Google's New AI-Powered Toxic Speech Filter Is The Right Approach
Alphabet Jigsaw (formerly Google Ideas) officially unveiled this morning their new tool for fighting toxic speech online, appropriately called Perspective. Powered by a deep learning model trained on more than 17 million manually reviewed reader comments provided by the New York Times, the model assigns a score to a given passage of text, rating it on a scale from 0 to 100% similar to statements that human reviewers have previously rated as "toxic." What makes this new approach from Google so different than past approaches is that it largely focuses on language rather than ideas: for the most part you can express your thoughts freely and without fear of censorship as long as you express them clinically and clearly, while if you resort to emotional diatribes and name calling, regardless of what you talk about, you will be flagged. What does this tell us about the future of toxic speech online and the notion of machines guiding humans to a more "perfect" humanity? One of the great challenges in filtering out "toxic" speech online is first defining what precisely counts as "toxic" and then determining how to remove such speech without infringing on people's ability to freely express their ideas.
