Oxford University researchers have estimated that 47 percent of U.S. jobs could be automated within the next two decades. But which ones will robots take first? First, we should define "robots" (for this article only) as technologies, such as machine learning algorithms running on purpose-built computer platforms, that have been trained to perform tasks that currently require humans to perform. With this in mind, let's think about what you'll do after white-collar work. Oh, and I do have a solution for the short term that will make you the last to lose your job to a robot, but I'm saving it for the end of the article.
What privacy pros can take away from Uber's Greyball
That's an adage that is hopefully familiar to all privacy professionals. It's certainly something we talk a lot about in the office. I think we're learning that, when taken on as a corporate philosophy, applying ethical considerations to your products and services can go a long way in procuring user trust. An article from my colleague, Angelique Carson, for example, on whether the profession needs an ethical code has generated a lot of interesting discussion surrounding a privacy pro's obligation to not simply advise a company regarding legality, but to advocate on behalf of the consumer. In particular, advanced technology is putting pressure on ethical considerations.
AI will soon replace hundreds of thousands of public sector workers – and that's a good thing
Last month, while commuters suffered, Jeremy Hunt announced that the NHS will work with three artificial intelligence (AI) companies to deliver health advice over the telephone in London, Yorkshire and the West Midlands. AI is improving to the level that it can understand complex areas such as medical diagnosis as well as humans can. Meanwhile, HMRC has been able to reduce its administrative staff by a third over the past decade, with great savings to the taxpayer, thanks to its online self-assessment service. Crucially, this also means a better service: completing tax returns on the internet may not yet be exactly a joy, but it is still a huge advance on previous days of paper returns and letters lost in the post. My think tank, Reform, has just finished a study which suggests the wider public sector can follow suit.
Biometric Authentication Provides Body of Evidence
If you're as plugged in a we are, then you probably have something like 150 online accounts. That means you probably have 150 variations of the same half-dozen login names and passwords. And chances are you've gotten a message from a friend in the last few months telling you that it looks like you got hacked again, after he received email spam to enlarge an embarrassingly small body part. Well, we think the days of the alphanumeric password are numbered. The age of biometric authentication is dawning.
Three Israeli Firms Among Top 50 Artificial Intelligence Companies
Fortune magazine last week released a list of "50 Companies Leading the AI Revolution," and the prestigious list includes three hot Israeli companies in the artificial intelligence sector: Logz.io, Fortune's infographic includes only six countries and features an equal number of notable AI companies from Israel (population 8.5 million) as China (population 1.38 billion) and the United Kingdom, and more than France and Taiwan. Only the United States has more companies on the graph. Fortune relied on research firm CB Insights' AI 100 list of the most promising artificial intelligence startups globally, based on factors like financing history, investor quality, business category, and momentum. The CB Insights list also includes Israeli companies Prospera Technologies (ag-tech at work in Spain, Mexico, and New York) and Chorus.ai
How artificial intelligence is powering retail customer experience
According to analyst Forrester, artificial intelligence (AI), big data and analytics will increase businesses' access to data, broaden the types of data that can be analysed, and raise the level of sophistication of the resulting insight. AI beats top human players at poker
In 1952, Professor Sandy Douglas created a tic-tac-toe game on the EDSAC, a room-sized computer at the University of Cambridge. One of the first ever computer games, it was developed as part of a thesis on human-computer interaction. Forty-five years later, in 1997, another milestone occurred when IBM's Deep Blue machine defeated Garry Kasparov, the world chess champion. This was followed by Watson, again created by IBM, which appeared on the Jeopardy! Yet another breakthrough was Google's DeepMind AlphaGo, which in 2016 defeated the Go world champion Lee Se-dol at a tournament in South Korea.
Microsoft's AI writes code by looting other software
Artificial intelligence has taught itself to create its own encryption and produced its own universal'language'. A neural network, called DeepCoder, developed by Microsoft and University of Cambridge computer scientists, has learnt how to write programs without a prior knowledge of code. First reported by the New Scientist, the system works by taking lines of code from existing programs and combining them. The system is only able to produce short, five-line, pieces of code at present but this has been enough to test it against real-world problems used by trainee developers. "We have found several problems in real online programming challenges that can be solved with a program in our language," the research paper says.
AImotive aims to convert regular cars into driverless ones inexpensively
The AImotive office is in a small converted house at the end of a quiet residential street in sunny Mountain View, spitting distance from Google's headquarters. Outside is a branded Toyota Prius covered in cameras, one of three autonomous cars the Hungarian company is testing in the sleepy neighbourhood. While other autonomous car projects, including those from Waymo and Uber, rely on an expensive (but very useful) radar-like system called Lidar for depth perception and obstacle detection (as well as cameras for seeing the colour of traffic lights and signs), AImotive is trying to do the same using regular cameras combined with artificial intelligence. This means the company can convert a regular car into a driverless one for a fraction of the price – around $6,000 – as opposed to $70,000-$100,000. "The whole traffic system is based on the visual system," explained founder and CEO Laszlo Kishonti. "Drivers don't have bat ears and sonars, you just look around and drive."
