Creepy new app matches pictures of strangers with their Facebook profile within seconds
A British entrepreneur claims to have created an app capable of tracking anyone down on Facebook just by analysing a picture of their face. Facezam, which plans to launch on iOS later this month, claims to scan billions of Facebook photos per second, which it accesses through a database for developers. According to its website, Facezam works with 70% accuracy, and can link an image to a Facebook account within seconds. However, that figure is said to drop to 55% when a person's face is positioned at an angle or partly covered by sunglasses, hair or a hat. Robot buses will hit the streets of Dubai by 2019
In its drive to become a city of the future, authorities in Dubai have purchased a network of robotic pods to shuttle people to a man-made island. The transport system will see 25 driverless buses connecting Bluewaters island, which is currently under construction, with the mainland. It is hoped that the system will one day ferry up to 10,000 people back and forth every hour. World's first 3D-printed skyscraper to be built in UAE
A construction firm based in Dubai has announced plans to build the world's first 3D-printed skyscraper. The company, called Cazza, has confirmed that it will be erected in the United Arab Emirates. It says it will use a new technique called "crane printing" to create the building. Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 becomes fastest-selling smartphone in India
Xiaomi says its new Redmi Note 4 has become the fastest selling smartphone in India. The Chinese firm said it had moved more than one million units in just 45 days since its launch, meaning one sold every four seconds. The phone is the successor to the Redmi Note 3, which shifted more than 2.3 million units in the country following its 2016 launch, making it the best-selling smartphone in India in terms of online sales. "Redmi Note 4 has become the fastest smartphone model to sell a million units in India. Redmi Note 4 has sold more than one million units in 45 days from its first sale on 23 January, 2017," Xiaomi said.

A Microsoft Research team has created a competition using Project Malmo, a platform that uses Minecraft as a testing ground for advanced artificial intelligence research. The team is challenging PhD students to develop an AI that learns to collaborate with other randomly assigned players to achieve a high score in a mini-game within the virtual world. The field of collaborative AI research involves the development of technologies that work with, empower and augment human capabilities. The ability to collaborate is key to the development of a general AI that can mimic the nuanced and complex way humans learn and make decisions. Such an AI would represent an evolution from task-specific AI technologies that recognize speech, translate languages and caption images.
National Grid exploring the potential of Artificial Intelligence to optimise renewables
The National Grid has confirmed that it is in the "earliest stages" of discussions exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which could potentially maximise the use of renewable energy by predicting peaks in demand across the UK. The National Grid, which operates and owns the infrastructure that transports electricity across the UK, has seen its ability in balancing and stabilising the grid challenged in recent years as intermittent renewables such as solar and wind have been fed into the energy mix. While the introduction of renewables into the mix forms a key role in both national and European legislation to decarbonise the grid, concerns have been raised as to the National Grid's ability to deal with fluctuating wind and solar resources, which can sometimes produce more energy than the system can cope with. Energy storage and demand response initiatives, whereby businesses either store surplus energy or increase or reduce energy consumption based on demand, are being incorporated by the National Grid, which is now "exploring what opportunities" AI could offer to balance the situation. The National Grid revealed that it is in discussions with the UK-based AI company DeepMind about introducing new technologies to help balance the grid and improve the use of renewables.

Germany reportedly intends to acquire the Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton high-altitude surveillance drone, according to a story in Sueddeutsche Zeitung. In 2013, Germany cancelled a similar program to acquire Northrop Grumman's RQ-4 Global Hawk, a surveillance drone on which the newer Triton is based, due to cost overruns. The Triton is a large, long-endurance system that was originally developed for maritime surveillance by the U.S. Navy. The U.S. Army released a report outlining its strategy for obtaining and using unmanned ground vehicles. The Robotics and Autonomous Systems strategy outlines short, medium, and long-term goals for the service's ground robot programs.
