Forty-six SAP customers from banking and insurance gathered to discuss the current and future challenges these sectors face, as well as to gain hands-on experience as to how machine learning can help master them. Machine learning and artificial intelligence provide unheard-of opportunities to banks and insurers to gain actionable insights from the large amounts of data they are dealing with on a daily basis. Banking is currently experiencing the need to accommodate the wishes of a generation who expects to have "a bank on their phone" (Stephen Lofthouse, University College London), a development that FinTech startups have caught on to much faster.
Uber's Self-Driving Crash Proves We Need Self-Driving Cars
A self-driving Uber car was involved in a high-speed crash in Tempe, Arizona yesterday. No on was seriously injured, and the Volvo XC90 SUV, which was driving itself at the time, had the right of way and bears no blame, according to police. "We are continuing to look into this incident and can confirm we had no backseat passengers in the vehicle," says Uber spokesperson Chelsea Kohler. Two engineers were riding up front, and Uber has grounded its Arizona fleet while it investigates what happened. The police haven't released details on the other driver, beyond confirmation that no one was badly hurt.

Up to one-third of Britishjobscould be taken over by robots by the early 2030s, impacting 10 million Britons but with women less likely to face redundancy, a UK study showed. The research, by accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, found 30 percent of UK jobs could face automation compared to 38 percent in the United States, 35 percent in Germany, and 21 percent in Japan. Researchers, however, said this wouldn't necessarily lead to less employment as jobs may change rather than disappear. But the distinction between men and women was clear, with PwC estimating 35 percent of men's jobs were at risk compared to 26 percent of women's because of the high number of women in sectors requiring social skills like education and health. Male workers are also more concentrated in jobs requiring lower education levels, like transportation and manufacturing.

If there's one thing that labor economists and leaders in Silicon Valley generally seem to agree on, it's that increasingly sophisticated technology is coming to replace American jobs. According to a new report from PricewaterhouseCoopers, 38 percent of U.S. jobs are at high risk of being replaced by automation in the next 15 years, compared with 30 percent of jobs in the U.K. and 21 percent in Japan. The United States, like the United Kingdom, is dominated by service jobs in sectors like manufacturing, transportation, finance, and food service, and U.S. jobs are particularly at risk because, according to PwC's chief U.K. economist John Hawksworth, the tasks American workers perform are just easier to automate. Still, the White House seems completely uninterested in the imminent threat facing U.S. employment and wages, choosing to cast blame instead on China and Mexico for the decline of U.S. manufacturing jobs. "We want products made by our workers in our factories stamped with those four magnificent words--made in the U.S.A.," President Donald Trump declared on a recent trip to a Boeing plant in South Carolina.

Robotics and artificial intelligence could affect almost a third of UK jobs by the 2030s, according to a study. However, the report from accountancy firm PwC also predicted that the nature of some occupations would change rather than disappear. It added that automation could create more wealth and additional jobs elsewhere in the economy. Jobs in manufacturing and retail were among the most at risk from the new technologies, the report said. The study estimated that 30% of existing jobs in the UK were potentially at a high risk of automation, compared with 38% in the US, 35% in Germany and 21% in Japan.
