LastPass password manager suffers 'major' security problem
LastPass users are being advised to avoid the password manager while it addresses a "unique and highly sophisticated" security issue. The popular service designed to help internet users protect their online accounts and, as such, is an obvious target for cybercriminals. LastPass hasn't revealed any further details about the problem, but Google's Project Zero security researcher Tavis Ormandy, who discovered it, says it's a serious one. Universal Basic Income: Is It the Necessary Next Step? - Futurum
Elon Musk, the genius founder of Tesla and SpaceX, recently predicted computers and robots are likely to take over the human workforce, and that the government will need to provide a salary--also known as universal basic income (UBI)--to keep society afloat. While I'm a tech guy and won't proclaim to know the economic rationale behind UBI, I do know this: When Elon Musk speaks, I listen. In fact, Musk is not alone. A recent study from Oxford University estimates that 47 percent of U.S. jobs could be made obsolete in the next two decades as automation and deep learning continue to advance. Even highly technical jobs are in danger of being overtaken by AI.
Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things Attract Almost Half of InsurTech Funding Globally in 2016, According to Accenture Research
The research, which includes new analysis of CB Insights data on 450 insurtech deals over the last three years, appears in a new Accenture report titled "The Rise of InsurTech." The report was released today in conjunction with Accenture's Fintech Innovation Lab in London, which for the first time includes a dedicated insurtech stream comprising leading industry startups. According to the report, the combined number of deals across AI (including automation) and the IoT (including connected insurance) increased 79 percent in 2016. Even though the two technologies represented only one-quarter (24 percent) of the 216 insurtech deals globally last year, they accounted for 44 percent or US$711 million of total insurtech investment – compared with just 10 percent of global insurtech investment in 2015. "We've seen a rapid acceleration of investment into and deal activity around intelligent automation and IoT start-ups over the last 12 months," said Roy Jubraj, a co-author of the report and Accenture's Digital & Innovation lead in the company's Financial Services practice in the U.K. and Ireland.
Nintendo Switch fans targeted by cybercriminals with fake competitions and emulators
Scammers are attempting to trick Nintendo Switch fans into downloading malicious software by falsely promising to provide access to emulators for the console. Researchers from Norton by Symantec have found that criminals are using a variety of websites and YouTube videos to take advantage of internet users. Searching "Nintendo Switch emulator" on YouTube brings up a selection of videos, the most popular of which has over 75,000 views at the time of writing. Some of the clips tell viewers they can play Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on a PC by visiting a website and downloading a file. Others, which Norton by Symantec believes to have been deliberately designed to be generic so they can be repurposed for other trending search terms, show a person refer to "free tools" but never explicitly mention the Switch emulator.
Self-driving Uber software behaved like a human before crashing, suggests eye-witness
New details about the recent Arizona car crash involving a self-driving Uber have emerged, and suggest that the vehicle's software may have made a risky decision seconds before the collision. According to a police report, the self-driving Volvo had been travelling along a wide boulevard with a 40mph speed limit. It was in self-driving mode at the time and was carrying two'safety' drivers, who say it was travelling at 38mph. The traffic lights that the Uber car was approaching turned yellow as it entered an intersection, where a Honda on the other side of the road made a left turn. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.
AI And Automation By The Numbers: Predictions, Perceptions, And Proposals
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin declared last week that the threat of artificial intelligence taking over American jobs "is not even on my radar screen." Mnuchin is "not worried at all," at least not for the next 50 to 100 years. This was in sharp contrast to the attitude of the previous administration. President Obama, for example, opined that "We've been seeing specialized AI in every aspect of our lives, from medicine and transportation to how electricity is distributed, and it promises to create a vastly more productive and efficient economy… But it also has some downsides that we're gonna have to figure out in terms of not eliminating jobs. How good or bad AI will be for employment and how soon its beneficial or detrimental effects will manifest themselves have been debated--loudly and persistently--over the last few years.
Grow a house with plant-robot hybrids
Robots and plants are being intricately linked into a new type of living technology that its creators believe could be used to grow a house. 'The growth is for free, but we have to control the plants to grow in the shapes we want,' explained Professor Heiko Hamann, from the University of Lübeck in Germany, who coordinates the EU-funded flora robotica project. The plants grow through a network of sensors, computers and 3D-printed robotic nodes that are connected to each other and constantly monitor the plants. The team uses a white plastic scaffolding with black strips woven into it to guide the growth. The strips contain LED lights and sensors that can cause plants to grow into pre-programed shapes.

iPhone 5 could lose access to future Apple software updates
Apple could be about to drop support for older models of the iPhone. The company's developer downloads webpage lists all of the devices that are in line for the upcoming iOS 10.3.2 update, which is currently in beta. Missing from the list are the iPhone 5, iPhone 5C and fourth-generation iPad.
