Lawmakers Say Briton Killed in Drone Strike Was Threat to UK
British lawmakers say a U.K. man killed by a Royal Air Force drone strike in Syria was an Islamic State group attack planner who posed a "very serious threat" to Britain. Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee scrutinized the August 2015 strike that killed Reyaad Khan and two others. It was the first such drone strike acknowledged by the British government. Committee chairman Dominic Grieve said Wednesday that intelligence assessments left "no doubt that Reyaad Khan posed a very serious threat to the U.K." But he said lawmakers still had questions about ministers' decision-making, because some documents were withheld from the committee. Grieve said that was "profoundly disappointing."
Accenture adopts German accent for AI research ยป Banking Technology
Accenture and the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) have formed an alliance to make the most out of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Accenture will get access to DFKI research results, AI tools, and its "Living Labs". Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wahlster, CEO of DFKI, says it is seeing a "high degree of maturity for applications in the areas of smart data and services, deep learning, human-robot-collaboration and AI-based retail". According to Accenture, AI is a major growth and productivity factor for the economy, and is projected to boost labour productivity by up to 40% through "fundamentally changing how we work and reinforcing the role of people to drive growth in business". The firm adds that AI has the potential to more than double Germany's annual growth rate of gross value added from 1.4% to 3% by 2035.
Artificial intelligence can accurately predict future heart disease and strokes, study finds
Computers that can teach themselves from routine clinical data are potentially better at predicting cardiovascular risk than current standard medical risk models, according to new research at the University of Nottingham. The team of primary care researchers and computer scientists compared a set of standard guidelines from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) with four'machine-learning' algorithms โ these analyse large amounts of data and self-learn patterns within the data to make predictions on future events โ in this case, a patient's future risk having of heart disease or a stroke. The results, published in the online journal PLOS ONE, showed that the self-teaching'artificially intelligent' tools were significantly more accurate in predicting cardiovascular disease than the established algorithm. In computer science, the AI algorithms that were used are called'random forest', 'logistic regression', 'gradient boosting' and'neural networks'. Dr Stephen Weng, from the university's NIHR School for Primary Care Research, said: "Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of illness and death worldwide. Our study shows that artificial intelligence could significantly help in the fight against it by improving the number of patients accurately identified as being at high risk and allowing for early intervention by doctors to prevent serious events like cardiac arrest and stroke. "Current standard prediction models like the ACC are based on eight risk factors including age, cholesterol level and blood pressure but are too simplistic to account for other factors like medications, multiple disease conditions, and other non-traditional biomarkers.

Man GLG Taps Ferreira To Lead Machine Learning Efforts
Man Group's Man GLG unit has named former Florin Court Capital executive William Ferreira as the company's new head of machine learning. In his new role, Ferreira will be responsible for developing Man GLG's machine learning capabilities, providing the firm's portfolio managers with tools and techniques through which to support their analysis and decision-making processes, the company said in a statement. He will also work directly with Man GLG's teams on the application and interpretation of machine learning techniques in relation to topics such as analyzing news and social media, market events and announcements, and the visualization of complex data. Man AHL has been actively researching machine learning techniques and applying them within its client trading programs for several years, the statement continued, while the firm benefits from its collaboration with University of Oxford's Oxford-Man Institute, which focuses on cutting-edge research into machine learning techniques and data analytics. Before joining Man GLG, Ferreira was a senior quantitative researcher with London-based Florin Court Capital, and beforehand worked as technology manager for Man AHL from 2011 to 2014.
AI software start-up Airts nets six-figure PwC deal
Artificial intelligence (AI) software start-up Airts has landed a six-figure contract with accounting giant PwC for its system that helps to manage the workload of employees. The Edinburgh-based firm, which launched in 2013 and has an eight-strong team, is now preparing to roll out its software, dubbed Braid, to more clients across the UK and overseas on the back of the deal with the PwC service delivery centre in Poland. Its software aims to ease the burden on employers and staff of managing their workloads by using AI to automate schedules and allocate tasks depending on factors such as their capacity and skills. Chief executive and co-founder Andrew Bone said: "Major professional services firms like PwC constantly have to decide how best to allocate staff to client engagements in a way that balances the competing needs of the customer, the wellbeing of staff and, ultimately, the bottom line. Braid supports companies to overcome this challenge at scale by optimising the schedule as circumstances change." Airts, co-founded by chief technology officer Dr Alastair Andrew, has been supported by business accelerator programme Entrepreneurial Spark and last year raised ยฃ300,000 of seed investment from Scottish angel investors to fund its growth.
