Study makes musical link to evolution of stone age tools
Piano players may have more in common with a caveman than you might think, if the latest scientific findings are to be believed. Experts have previously argued that the evolution of language in our early ancestors led to advances stone age tools. But new research suggests that developments in areas of the brain used when we master musical instruments are responsible. Researchers from The University of East Anglia have been examining a'revolutionary' step forward in stone tool crafting around 1.75 million years ago. Around 1.75 million years ago, early humans moved from making simple tools from rocks and pebbles to producing two-sided, shaped tools like axes and cleavers. Researchers from the University of East Anglia wanted to better understand the link between brain development and the cognitive abilities behind creating these tools.

The British public's appetite for learning foreign languages has increased significantly after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, according to newly released data. Languages app Lingvist says it has seen a 91 per cent increase in UK users since the EU referendum last June, having compared its user base during the nine months before the vote to its user base in the nine months after the vote. The popularity of English-Spanish courses has grown by 427 per cent, according to the data, with English-French courses experiencing a 342 per cent increase in popularity amongst British users. £38m for Newport foundry to make new technology behind 5G
Funding of nearly £38m is expected to be announced for a facility to make compound semiconductors - a new technology behind robotics, 5G and driverless cars. The 10 councils in the Cardiff Capital Region are set to develop the foundry in Newport, which could create about 2,000 high skilled jobs in five years. The funding follows £12m from the Welsh Government in November 2015. It could make a world-leading hub for the new technology. The factory would be owned by the councils and is projected to create £375m of private sector investment in the next five years.

The future has already arrived in a small factory in Worcester, according to the man hired by Theresa May to put Britain at the forefront of the next industrial revolution. Juergen Maier, the chief executive of Siemens UK, believes new technologies including robotics, artificial intelligence and additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, can deliver greater productivity and create more highly paid jobs. But failing to crack the next revolution will come at a high price: falling living standards. The work being done in Worcester, and places like it, will be crucial if Britain is to be successful outside the EU, Maier says. The starting gun has been fired in this global race and Britain needs to get ahead.

Facebook has announced new measures for tackling fake news in the UK, ahead of next month's general election. The social network is set to treat the issue like clickbait, using algorithms to crack down on misleading articles. "We've found that if reading an article makes people significantly less likely to share it, that may be a sign that a story has misled people in some way," it said. Where you're most likely to get cyber-scammed in the UK, revealed
Cyber criminals are targeting people who live in major cities, with London and Birmingham residents most at risk, says a new report. According to Barclays' Digital Safety Index survey, 23 per cent of people living in the capital and 23 per cent of people living in Birmingham have been affected by at least one scam (table below). The report adds that 28 per cent of London residents and the same proportion of people who live in Bristol have experienced at least one type of online fraud, where the target's details have been compromised and the perpetrator has completed the transaction (table below). These are the questions that AI designers and engineers are already asking about the machine learning-enabled technologies–and now Ikea wants to ask the rest of us, as well.
Algorithms for Learning Sparse Additive Models with Interactions in High Dimensions

A function $f: \mathbb{R}^d \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is a Sparse Additive Model (SPAM), if it is of the form $f(\mathbf{x}) = \sum_{l \in \mathcal{S}}\phi_{l}(x_l)$ where $\mathcal{S} \subset [d]$, $|\mathcal{S}| \ll d$. Assuming $\phi$'s, $\mathcal{S}$ to be unknown, there exists extensive work for estimating $f$ from its samples. In this work, we consider a generalized version of SPAMs, that also allows for the presence of a sparse number of second order interaction terms. For some $\mathcal{S}_1 \subset [d], \mathcal{S}_2 \subset {[d] \choose 2}$, with $|\mathcal{S}_1| \ll d, |\mathcal{S}_2| \ll d^2$, the function $f$ is now assumed to be of the form: $\sum_{p \in \mathcal{S}_1}\phi_{p} (x_p) + \sum_{(l,l^{\prime}) \in \mathcal{S}_2}\phi_{(l,l^{\prime})} (x_l,x_{l^{\prime}})$. Assuming we have the freedom to query $f$ anywhere in its domain, we derive efficient algorithms that provably recover $\mathcal{S}_1,\mathcal{S}_2$ with finite sample bounds. Our analysis covers the noiseless setting where exact samples of $f$ are obtained, and also extends to the noisy setting where the queries are corrupted with noise. For the noisy setting in particular, we consider two noise models namely: i.i.d Gaussian noise and arbitrary but bounded noise. Our main methods for identification of $\mathcal{S}_2$ essentially rely on estimation of sparse Hessian matrices, for which we provide two novel compressed sensing based schemes. Once $\mathcal{S}_1, \mathcal{S}_2$ are known, we show how the individual components $\phi_p$, $\phi_{(l,l^{\prime})}$ can be estimated via additional queries of $f$, with uniform error bounds. Lastly, we provide simulation results on synthetic data that validate our theoretical findings.
