NHS cyber attack: Large-scale hack forces hospitals across England to divert emergency patients
Hospitals across England have been hit by a huge cyber attack, plunging the NHS into chaos. IT systems appear to have broken and emergency patients are having to be diverted to other areas, according to doctors. The hack appears to be an example of ransomware – malicious hackers breaking into computers and only allowing their owners back in when they pay enough money. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Germany will allow self-driving, but not driverless, cars on its roads
Add Germany to the list of places where businesses can test their self-driving cars on the open road -- as long as they have a driver sitting at the wheel ready to take control at any time. That's one of the restrictions imposed by a new law voted by the German Federal Council (Bundesrat) on Friday. The move will be a welcome one for Germany's automotive industry, allowing manufacturers such as Audi to test self-driving vehicles in their home country, rather than taking them all the way to California. Other requirements of the new law for anyone wanting to put a self-driving car on the German roads include the fitting of a "black box" recorder like those in planes -- with the same goal of helping investigators reconstruct what happened in the event of an accident. The box will be expected to track the vehicle's position and to record when and where the self-driving system takes control of the vehicle, suffers a technical problem, or requests the driver to take over, allowing the courts to apportion blame.
UK police will start using AI to decide whether suspects should be kept in custody
UK police in the city of Durham, England, are prepared to go live with a predictive artificial intelligence system that will determine whether a suspect should be kept in custody, according to the BBC. Called Hart, which stands for Harm Assessment Risk Tool, the system is designed to classify individuals based on a low, medium, or high risk of committing a future offense. Police plan to put it live in the next few months to test its effectiveness against cases in which custody specialists do not rely on the system's judgement. The AI assessment could be used for a number of different determinations, like whether a suspect should be kept for a longer length of time and whether bail should be set before or after a charge is issued. According to the BBC, Hart's decision-making is based on Durham police data gathered between 2008 and 2013, and it accounts for factors like criminal history, severity of the current crime, and whether a suspect is a flight risk.
Growing healthy resilient biological tissues on humanoid robots
Musculoskeletal robots may one day assist the growth of replacement tissue grafts for transplant patients. Researchers at the University of Oxford are beginning to investigate a potentially groundbreaking method for replacing damaged musculoskeletal tissues (such as muscle, tendons and ligaments), which remain unmet needs in regenerative medicine. The proposed approach, which involves growing tissue grafts directly on humanoid musculoskeletal robots, could result in healthier, stronger tissue prior to transplantation on a patient. Tissue engineering aims to produce biological tissue in vitro by a combination of cells, scaffolds, or matrices to support new tissue growth and bioreactors. Bioreactors are growth chambers where tissue constructs are grown and provide some form of mechanical stimulation.
UK startup Improbable just raised half a billion dollars to build the Matrix
A UK company wants to build massive-scale simulations of reality, and they just raised $502 million to do it. The Series B funding round, led by Softbank, values the company at over $1 billion. The money will be used to develop Improbable's technology, in particular its SpatialOS cloud-based operating system (currently in beta), which allows gaming companies to create huge virtual worlds. Improbable claims that SpatialOS allows for the creation of larger, and more complex worlds which support more simultaneously connected users than is possible with current technology. The limitations of current tech, among other reasons, is why Blizzard's World of Warcraft MMORPG is divided into multiple "servers" and isn't one persistent world where all the players play at the same time.

Like much of the film, it stands as a warning against hubris: it is possible to be too clever for your own good. In 1927, the big idea for the future was robots causing havoc among the toiling classes. Since then, the prophecies have darkened still. In the'fourth industrial revolution', they say, automation will eliminate the need for human workers altogether, triggering an employment Armageddon. It's tempting to imagine this will involve hoards of terrifying, chrome-finished androids with Austrian accents, but the future's coming out of Silicon Valley, not Hollywood. Most likely, the machine that will take your job won't be a Terminator, but an algorithm.

Many advances in electric self‑driving car technology and robotics are transferring across to industrial and commercial vehicles, which account for some 60% of the value of the overall electric vehicle market. In agriculture, the widening use over the next decade of autonomous hybrid or fully electric tractors, robotic machinery and drones could increase farm efficiency and revolutionize how food is produced. Although some of the technology in farming robots is similar to that of autonomous vehicles, it differs in that operations such as planting seeds, picking vegetables or fruits and localized application of pesticides have individual sensing, manipulation and processing requirements.
British cops test Minority Report-style system to stop crimes before they happen
BRITISH cops are using a system to stop crimes BEFORE they happen. Police in Durham are employing artificial intelligence designed to help officers decide whether or not to keep a suspect in custody. Dubbed the Harm Assessment Risk Tool (HART), it predicts the risk of the suspect re-offending by categorising them as low, medium or high risk. The force says the system is due to go live in the next few months, and could be picked up elsewhere in the country before the end of the year. HART is a system developed by University of Cambridge Professor Dr Geoffrey Barnes in a partnership between Durham Constabulary and the University of Cambridge's Centre for Evidence-Based Policing.
