Musical Instrument Recognition Using Their Distinctive Characteristics in Artificial Neural Networks

In this study an Artificial Neural Network was trained to classify musical instruments, using audio samples transformed to the frequency domain. Different features of the sound, in both time and frequency domain, were analyzed and compared in relation to how much information that could be derived from that limited data. The study concluded that in comparison with the base experiment, that had an accuracy of 93.5%, using the attack only resulted in 80.2% and the initial 100 Hz in 64.2%.

They speak with Roman Luchin, CEO of CyberTech Labs., about a robotics development platform called Trik. Trik is intended to be an intermediate step when learning about robotics between Lego Mindstorms and programming on an embedded platform. Trik allows users to program with a graphical interface by ordering blocks. These blocks contain code in several common programming languages (python, F#, Pascal, etc.) and the code can be modified directly. This is the second of three interviews from the conference.

More than 400 years ago, according to legend, a rabbi knelt by the banks of the Vltava river in what is now known as the Czech Republic. He pulled handfuls of clay out of the water and carefully patted them into the shape of a man. The Jews of Prague, falsely accused of using the blood of Christians in their rituals, were under attack. The rabbi, Judah Loew ben Bezalel, decided that his community needed a protector stronger than any human. He inscribed the Hebrew word for "truth", emet, onto his creation's forehead and placed a capsule inscribed with a Kabbalistic formula into its mouth. The creature sprang to life.


Jumping from drones is your newest extreme sport

A drone company in Latvia has executed what it calls the "the world's first drone jump." Aerones's 28-propeller drone hoisted a man over a 1,000 feet in the air after which he let go of the drone and coasted a bit before deploying a parachute to set him down safely back on earth. Sure, this isn't exactly edge of your seat stunt work, especially since another guy used a balloon to do the same thing from 18 miles above the planet. But still, it's easy to see how this kind of drone-assisted sky diving could be used for stealthy military and spy missions in the future. Or maybe (more likely) it'll become the latest extreme sports craze that's only slightly more dangerous than parkour and subway car surfing.

That was the message from Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos who was speaking this week during a'Fireside Chat', at the Internet Association's annual gala in Washington, where he also described the world as entering a'golden age' of technology for solving problems. Bezos, who was answering questions from Internet Association President & CEO Michael Beckerman on stage, described AI as an "enabling layer" that will "improve every business." He also discussed Amazon in the early days of the internet, addressing success and failure in business, and his hopes for the future of humanity.Amazon's feelings towards AI and machine learning have never been in doubt. Amazon, described by the Association as a'pioneer' in AI, has made its feelings clear around the use of breakthrough technologies and machine learning, both from an operational and product point of view for more than a decade. Internally Amazon is said to have more than 45,000 robots in use across its global warehouses, operated various ways to fulfil orders and is already testing drones in the UK for future deliveries.It was also one of the first, if not the first, retailer to use AI and machine learning to provide predictive analytics on every individual customer, enabling its platform to predict what else the customer might want to buy โ€“ thus boosting sales.


Should a computer be recognised as an inventor?

Ask a child what an inventor looks like and they will probably describe someone in a moth-eaten white coat with wild hair, mixing colourful chemicals and turning dials on bizarre machines in a makeshift laboratory. But ask the same question of a child in the not-so-distant future and they might instead describe an inventing machine, a computer powered by artificial intelligence (AI), to which humanity has outsourced all innovation. As AI becomes more powerful, the role it plays in the creative process becomes more problematic, particularly for those involved in crafting intellectual property (IP) laws. IP laws are usually conceived to encourage innovation and economic growth, to offer fair compensation for creative work or to respect the dignity and honour of the creator. "Like most legislation, [IP law] is about pragmatic compromise between different stakeholders with different ideals and objectives," says Carrick Flynn, research project manager with the University of Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute.

The experts say Apple's self-driving car project is canceled, delayed or converted into a software play. They'll also tell you that cars are a weird business for Apple to be in. Apple is going pedal-to-the-metal on building a car and for good reason. The late Apple founder and CEO wanted more than that, according to J. Crew CEO and chairman Mickey Drexler, who served on the Apple board from 1999 to 2015. Jobs wanted Apple to reinvent the automobile industry.

When asked, which businesses are most likely to benefit from artificial intelligence, UK consumers agreed the top three industries to be benefiting are engineering (45%), administration (40%) and customer service (31%.) Finance (29%), sales (26%) and marketing (22%) followed closely behind; each deemed'admin heavy' and therefore apt to benefit from automation. Project management and human resources close the list, with 20% and 16% respectively.
