The E-learning course starts by refreshing the basic concepts of the analytics process model: data preprocessing, analytics and post processing. We then discuss decision trees and ensemble methods (bagging, boosting, random forests), neural networks, support vector machines (SVMs), Bayesian networks, survival analysis, social networks, monitoring and backtesting analytical models. Evernote's cofounder has a new AI studio called 'All Turtles'

Phil Libin, the cofounder and former CEO of note-taking app Evernote, has launched a new venture capital (VC) fund called All Turtles in San Francisco, The Financial Times reports. The All Turtles "studio" will reportedly be used to back entrepreneurs developing products that are underpinned by artificial intelligence. The money will come from General Catalyst, Digital Garage, and a number of prominent investors from France, Japan and the US. Instead of backing companies like normal VCs, Libin reportedly wants to back "products" as he believes entrepreneurs shouldn't have to start a new company each time they want to try a new idea. Referring to Silicon Valley VC land, he said: "You're not allowed to work on something unless it could be a $10 billion company. Obviously there are a lot of products that could be worth a couple of hundred million."

There are big discussions in the automotive industry right now, about whether autonomous electric vehicles – yes, the ones that can drive themselves – will come to dominate transportation, personal and public, in the next few years. But it is completely foreseeable, in my opinion. The future of transportation is the electric vehicle (EV) because of sustainability; it can be powered by wind and sun, requiring only 1/3 of the energy of a vehicle with a combustion engine. Looking ahead to 2020, there will be many more EVs. Looking further to 2030, we will see major advancements in the area of autonomous driving.


Lyft partners with Google's Waymo to launch self-driving cars and challenge Uber

US ride services company Lyft and Google parent Alphabet's self-driving car unit Waymo have launched a self-driving vehicle partnership, bringing together two rivals to dominant ride-sharing service Uber. Lyft, the No. 2 US ride service by ride volume, in a statement said a deal to launch self-driving pilots would accelerate its vision for transportation and Waymo, which is beginning tests of a self-driving car service in Phoenix, said the partnership would let its technology reach "more people, in more places". Neither offered many details of the agreement, which was reported earlier by The New York Times. The car industry and technology companies are racing to develop self-driving technology, which they expect in a number of years will transform transportation, cutting costs of ride services and changing the way people buy and use cars. Uber is the biggest US ride service by volume and has been developing self-driving technology, which it sees as a key to its future, as it expands its ride service with human drivers.

The man who accidentally saved the NHS from its huge cyber attack has been revealed. Marcus Hutchins is a self-taught computer genius who works in cyber security. The 22-year-old surfer lives with his parents and didn't attend university. He also managed to save the entire world from one of the most damaging cyber attacks in history. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.

NHS hack: Hospitals were sent patch that would have prevented chaotic cyber attack

One small mistake might have allowed the hack that brought chaos to the NHS. Health trusts across England were sent details of a patch that would have kept them safe from the ransomware used in the huge cyber attack, according to NHS Digital. The attack brought problems for huge swathes of the NHS, leaving almost 50 trusts without proper access to their computers. The problems led to appointments being cancelled, doctors unable to work and may even have caused deaths within affected hospitals. Start-up of the week: ThingBook

Our start-up of the week is ThingBook, which uses AI to help internet of things and telecoms companies stay secure. "With the buzz around big data and analytics technologies (and despite the investment), many internet of things (IoT) and telecom companies struggle to extract actionable insights from their equipment data," explained Roman Ferrando, founder and CEO of ThingBook. "In this sense, the primary purpose of ThingBook is to allow data-driven decision-making processes, reducing the time, cost and uncertainty in the adoption of advanced data analytics solutions. 'The analytics market is always evolving; agility is a key success factor' – ROMAN FERRANDO ThingBook connects clients to their equipment telemetry data by applying artificial intelligence (AI). "We enable them to predict, analyse, share and act upon machine behaviours, optimising operations, detecting security threats and avoiding unplanned downtime, in real time, and processing thousands of sensors simultaneously." In collaboration with the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown – which supported ThingBook in its development stage through the New Frontiers Programme at the LINC and also through the School of Informatics and Engineering – the company is set to launch a product that predicts how machines will work, identifying unusual patterns and cyberattacks, and blocking unusual activity without human intervention. Ferrando said that ThingBook is the first such platform to be able to store, compare, analyse and predict thousands of equipment behaviours at the same time. It is built using the latest streaming technology and patented machine learning algorithms, which give the company the unique capability of processing up to 1trn messages per day in real time. He said that this technology can reduce equipment downtime by up to 50pc and capital expenditure by 30pc by extending equipment lifetime. "The IoT analytics market is rapidly gaining traction primarily due to the sudden outburst of data from IoT-enabled devices and increasing global penetration of connected devices," Ferrando explained. "The IoT analytics tools have a unique role in various industry verticals such as manufacturing, telecom, energy and utilities, retail, and transportation and logistics.


Human jobs being taken by robots, new study shows

Travel agents, pharmacy assistants and translators are already being replaced by robots, according to a report. After a string of warnings that millions of workers will be replaced by machines, a study suggests this is happening now on a grand scale. It claims that two thirds of the fastest declining jobs in Britain are being hit because of increased automation and advances in technology. It warns some professions could no longer exist in years to come. But it suggests nail technicians, security guards and chefs are thriving and are largely immune from the rise of the machines.
