Do Europeans trust driverless cars?

Around one in three believe that driverless cars will emerge to be the major form of transport across Europe during the next decade. Research from Gemalto, a €3.1bn digital security company, put questions to participants in Russia, the UK, France and Germany, and found that 27 percent wouldn't trust a driverless car to complete a journey at all, with almost half fearing that cyber criminals could hack into the car computer and cause accidents. Christine Caviglioli, SVP for Automotive & Mobility Services, Gemalto, commented: "Digitalisation is putting the automotive industry on the road to revolution. The Internet of Things (IoT) and cutting edge connected car technology is opening the door to intelligent telematics and is unleashing a new breed of features and services - everything from enhanced in-car services and car sharing to fully autonomous vehicles. It's a profound paradigm shift, the likes of which haven't been seen in the industry since the introduction of the first motorized vehicles in the early 1900s. The technology has the potential to change the concept of driving forever."

New AI-assisted bionic hand can see things before it grabs them - Cantech Letter

Biomedical engineers at Newcastle University in the UK have developed a prosthetic limb that can "see" objects before it grasps them and can adjust its grip depending on the size and shape of the object. Although we often talk about our limbs sometimes having a mind of their own, science has in fact made the figure of speech a reality with the creation of a new bionic hand which uses artificial intelligence and a camera fitted to the back of a prosthetic hand to manipulate objects at faster speeds than current prosthetic models. The new bionic hand uses deep learning, that branch of AI and machine learning which incorporates artificial neural networking to make decisions based on large data sets, with researchers "training" the computer vision system by inputting images of over 500 graspable objects, each one scanned from 72 perspectives. The system was programmed to classify objects based on four possible grasping motions: a two-digit pinch, a three-digit tripod, a sideways full-hand grasp (used when holding a cup, for example) and a palm-down grasp (used to pick up an apple). The system was tested with two volunteers with trans-radial (below the elbow) amputations, who after training, were able to pick up and move target objects with an 88 per cent success rate.


Ofcom proposes customers should be able to switch mobile providers by text

Mobile phone customers could soon be able to dump their network provider by text. Ofcom says people shouldn't need to make a potentially long and uncomfortable phone call to their operator in order to switch networks, as they currently have to. Research conducted by the regulator also shows that these calls can often be disrupted, causing further stress. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Every week, euRobotics will publish a video interview with a project, so that you can find out more about their activities. A wide variety of research and innovation themes are represented in the new projects: from healthcare via transportation, industrial- and logistics robotics to events media production using drones. Some deal with complex safety matters on the frontier where robots meet people, to ensure that no one comes to harm. Others will create a sustainable ecosystem in the robotics community, setting up common platforms supporting robotics development.


Zurich embraces artificial intelligence

Zurich Insurance is introducing artificial intelligence to help decide personal injury claims. The insurance giant is rolling out the technology after processing time was cut from an hour to only seconds during a trial, according to a Reuters report. "We recently introduced AI claims handling … and saved 40,000 work hours, while speeding up the claim processing time to five seconds," Zurich chairman Tom de Swaan told Reuters. "We absolutely plan to expand the use of this type of AI." Big insurers are in a rush to jump on the bandwagon for AI and big data as tech-driven start-ups disrupt the market, according to Reuters. De Swaan said that Zurich would continue to increase the role of AI in claims handling.

When I was very young, most of the computer games I played on my Commodore 64 were not very good. They weren't the classics we all remember; they mostly weren't Impossible Mission or Way of the Exploding Fist (though I did play those too, I wasn't a barbarian). Every week my mum would take me to Wythenshawe library in South Manchester where you could rent games for 10p each. The best ones were constantly unavailable, so I'd grab what I could – weird titles no one else wanted. This is how I discovered the roguelike adventures such as Aztec and Sword of Fargoal with their strange glitchy visuals and endlessly changing tombs.

Last week, I spoke at the Swiss Mobile Association. The event was held at one of the oldest cross-functional research institutes Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute just outside Zurich. Prior to being involved in IoT and AI, I worked for many years in Telecoms. I believe that from an innovation standpoint – we are living in a post-mobile world. Today, just as the Web itself, Mobile is a mature industry.


MIT's camera drones are smart enough to get the perfect shot

Over the last few years we've seen more camera drones than we can count, but getting the best footage out of them will take something extra. While many big budget productions are already using drone cameras, a system developed by MIT and ETH Zurich researchers goes beyond mere Steadicam or even subject-tracking, by allowing the director to define exactly how a shot is framed. Specifically, it lets operators specify where an object or face should be in the frame, which direction it should face and how large it will appear, while also accounting for obstacles in the environment. That way the drone can calculate an appropriate flight path on its own, weighing the various factors against each other to get the best shot each time. The researchers will present their findings at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation later this month, but for now, directors will have to keep begging Roger Deakins to shoot their next project.


UK gov draws driverless car test zone around M40 corridor

A UK minister has reassured the motor industry that buyers of driverless cars will not have to employ a gentleman with a red flag and top hat as he outlined a UK testbed for autonomous vehicles yesterday. Speaking at the SMTT Connected conference in London, industry secretary Greg Clark outlined a "cluster of excellence" stretching from London to, er, Birmingham into which the government will direct its support in its efforts to establish the UK as a leader in autonomous vehicles. Clark will be giving the area a boost in the coming weeks with announcement of the first tranche of funding from a £100m investment programme for the creation of test facilities for connected and autonomous vehicles. The cluster roughly corresponds to the M40 corridor, and auto history buffs will recognise it as the resting place of British motoring brand names - it's no coincidence that the British Motor Museum is just off the M40. But while the memory of British Leyland et al might be fading from the collective consciousness, Clark banged the drum for the UK's contribution in the autonomous and connected vehicle space.
