Apple and Nokia are friends again

Apple and Nokia are no longer locked in a legal duel. The two companies announced on Tuesday that they "settled all litigation related to their intellectual property dispute and agreed [to] a multi-year patent license." The legal suit in question is from December 2016, when Nokia sued Apple in the United States and Germany, alleging 32 types of patent infringement. Nokia claimed Apple used a lot of technology in the iPhone that Nokia developed, such as user interfaces and mobile device displays. SEE ALSO: New documents provide a glimpse into Apple's self-driving car program Now, thanks to the settlement, Nokia will get a chunk of cash from Apple as well as additional revenue as the agreement runs its course.


Artificial 'Venus flytrap' can sense and pick up things

The Venus flytrap may be known for its jaws of death, but the carnivorous plant has inspired a gentle device. Engineers have developed a soft, gripping device that can sense and pick up objects up to 100 bigger than itself, mimicking the ferocious plant. And the simple soft object, capable of identifying its targets, could be used to handle delicate items autonomously one day which could transform manufacturing. Venus flytraps recognise their prey using touch-sensitive trigger hairs located on the trap's inner surface. When stimulated, these hairs generate an electric signal that is transmitted to the plant.


Artificial Intelligence and Robotics: Who's Liable for the decisions made?

Reuters news agency reported on 16th February 2017 that "European lawmakers called...for EU-wide legislation to regulate the rise of robots, including an ethical framework for their development and deployment and the establishment of liability for the actions of robots including self-driving cars." The question of determining'liability' for decision making achieved by robots or artificial intelligence is an interesting and important subject as the implementation of this technology increases in industry, and starts to more directly impact our day to day lives. Indeed, as application of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning technology grows, we are likely to witness how it changes the nature of work, businesses, industries and society. And yet, although it has the power to disrupt and drive greater efficiencies, AI has its obstacles: the issue of'who is liable when something goes awry' being one of them. Like many protagonists in industry, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are trying to tackle this liability question.


A Neuromorphic Chip that Makes Music

A chip made by researchers at IMEC in Belgium uses brain-inspired circuits to compose melodies. The prototype neuromorphic chip learns the rules of musical composition by detecting patterns in the songs it's exposed to. It then creates its own song in the same style. It's an early demo from a project to develop low-power, general purpose learning accelerators that could help tailor medical sensors to their wearers and enable personal electronics to learn their users' patterns of behavior. Today's connected devices don't have much smarts on board--instead they send data into the cloud for analysis by remote servers, where energy use and cooling costs are not at a premium, says Praveen Raghavan, who leads technology development for neuromorphic computation at IMEC.


3 Big Questions About AI-Guided Medicine

Last month, I discussed how artificial intelligence (AI) and "deep learning" algorithms could have a profound impact on the practice of medicine. This month, I'd like to cover three questions that patients, doctors, and policymakers might wish to ask as we approach the era of AI-guided health care. One of the potential promises of AI in medicine is the ability to comb through thousands (or millions) of patient records to detect clinically significant patterns not yet discovered by human researchers. A UK study showed AIs could more reliably predict who might be at risk for future heart attacks and strokes than models based on the best human guidelines from the American Heart Association. The AI project "Deep Patient" showed similar promise in predicting who might develop "severe diabetes, schizophrenia, and various cancers."


Champions League final fans to have faces scanned

Police in Cardiff will use facial recognition to track the 170,000 football fans expected to descend on the city for the Champions League final. The Welsh capital is gearing up to host the biggest crowd it has ever welcomed for the June 3 match when Real Madrid will take on Juventus at the Millennium Stadium. South Wales Police has been given £177,000 ($230,000) to pilot the facial recognition technology, which will monitor people on pre-determined'watch lists' These watch lists may include dangerous wanted or missing persons. Facial recognition identifies people by analysing the shape of a person's face. Each face has approximately 80 unique nodal points which distinguishes one from another.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now being hyped in earnest. The media is full of stories about its achievements: magical algorithms beating humans on their own turf in Jeopardy, the Chinese go-game and Texas hold' m, not to mention the stock traders and radiologists soon to be displaced by machines. IBM was very clever to name its AI software suite Watson. A bit of mystique is always intriguing. And that is not all: venture capital is pouring into AI start-ups – 15 billion US dollars since 2012!


'Smart genes' account for 20% of intelligence: study

PARIS – Scientists on Monday announced the discovery of 52 genes linked to human intelligence, 40 of which have been identified as such for the first time. The findings also turned up a surprising connection between intelligence and autism that could one day help shed light on the condition's origins. Taken together, the new batch of "smart genes" accounted for 20 percent of the discrepancies in IQ test results among tens of thousands of people examined, the researchers reported in the journal Nature Genetics says. "For the first time, we were able to detect a substantial amount of genetic effects in IQ," said Danielle Posthuma, a researcher at the Center for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research in Amsterdam, and the main architect of the study. "Our findings provide insight into the biological underpinnings of intelligence," she said. Most of the newly discovered gene variants linked to elevated IQ play a role in regulating cell development in the brain, especially neuron differentiation and the formation of neural information gateways called synapses.
