BlessU-2, the name of the robot priest in Germany, can give blessings in five languages and beams light from its hands. The bot was created in honor of Martin Luther, the Guardian reported Tuesday. Five hundred years ago, revolutionary printing presses helped spread the word of the Protestant Reformation. The robot was configured by the Protestant church in Hesse and Nassau in Wittenberg, Germany, half a millennium after Luther nailed his 95 Theses to a church door. The creators wanted to ignite a conversation about how artificial intelligence could possibly be a part of religion's future.

San Francisco: Jensen Huang, co-founder, president and chief executive officer of Santa Clara-based Nvidia Corp., says that the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies such as machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing and computer vision augur well for the growth prospects of his company. These chips, called graphics processing units (GPUs), helped Nvidia fuel the growth of the personal computer gaming market almost two decades back. Huang hopes the increasing use of GPUs for AI will help his company repeat the success. Huang argues that even when you increase the number of central processing unit transistors in a computer, they result in a small increase in application performance, whereas GPUs, which are specifically designed to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, make them more suitable for high-performance computing tasks.

Last Thursday (May 18), music industry executives and potential investors flocked to Los Angeles's El Rey Theatre for a glimpse of the potential future of the music-tech industry. Inside was a demo day concluding the first-ever Techstars Music startup accelerator program. Headed by Bob Moczydlowsky, the former head of Twitter Music, the program invited 11 startups to work on their products from out of Techstars' LA office over the course of three months. Each company received a $120,000 investment, access to a hundreds-large pool of mentors (including members of program partners Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Sonos, and Harmonix), and lifetime support in exchange for six percent equity. The incubation period was, as Moczydlowsky told Billboard, "designed to be a year's worth of work in three months."

Talking robot to protect fans at World Cup in Russia

Fans flocking Russia during next year's World Cup would have an unlikely security guard in the form of a talking robot. The robot named AlanTim and developed by scientists at Moscow Technological Institute (MTI) would be able to call the police when it senses trouble, according to UK's Mirror online paper. "His main hobby is said to be football, he loves to watch matches and to analyse the tactics of the teams," said the paper of the robot, which is only about four feet tall. The talking robot unveiled last week assured English fans of their safety during the tournament by saying: "I read on the internet that many English fans have doubts regarding the safety of visiting Russia. You have nothing to worry about, I will stand up personally for your protection. I promise to accompany you in Moscow and protect you from any problems."

Half a millennium later, the robot, called BlessU-2, is intended to trigger debate about the future of the church and the potential of artificial intelligence. "We wanted people to consider if it is possible to be blessed by a machine, or if a human being is needed," Stephan Krebs of the Protestant church in Hesse and Nassau, which is behind the initiative, told the Guardian. The robot has a touchscreen chest, two arms and a head.
