Tube users could soon get phone signal underground, it's been reported. TfL is said to be in talks with telecommunications groups, and could offer full mobile coverage on London Underground after next week's general election. Commuters can already access the internet on sections of the tube network by connecting to Virgin Media's Wi-Fi service, but it isn't especially practical. Three Kodi repositories and add-ons have been shut down after being targeted by an anti-piracy group in Israel, it's been reported. They all stopped operating this week after the group, Zira, threatened them with legal action. Though Kodi isn't illegal, people can use third-party add-ons built by developers to access illegal streams for sports events, films and TV shows through the software. One drab afternoon a few years ago something very unusual happened to me. I was lounging under a tree in a packed east London park when I experienced a sudden feeling of vertigo, followed immediately by an overwhelming and intense sense of familiarity. The people around me vanished and I found myself lying on a tartan picnic blanket amid a field of high golden wheat. The memory was rich and detailed. I could hear the sway of the wheat ears as a gentle breeze brushed through them. I felt warm sunlight on the back of my neck and watched as birds wheeled and floated above me. It was a pleasant and extremely vivid recollection. The problem was that it never actually happened. What I was experiencing was an extreme form of a very common mental illusion: déjà vu.
Haptic Feedback Will Let Users Control Prosthetic Devices Better, Study Says
For a long time, researchers have been trying to work on giving a natural sense of muscles to prosthetic limbs. According to a research by Rice University, the University of Pisa and Italian Institute of Technology, haptic feedback could help in providing patients the ability to discern the size and feel objects without looking at them. "Humans have an innate sense of how the parts of their bodies are positioned, even if they can't see them. This'muscle sense' is what allows people to type on a keyboard, hold a cup, throw a ball, use a brake pedal and do countless other daily tasks," said Marcia O'Malley, professor of mechanical engineering at Rice said in the press release issued Tuesday. In Paris on May 20, a sleek, streamlined vehicle colored black, white and fluorescent yellow moved slowly around a race course on a blocked-off road. The futuristic vehicle looked like a winged torpedo and had a periscope-like camera-equipped object protruding from the rear of its body. The vehicle looked similar to a Formula One racing car, except that it was electric, and had no driver's seat. Logos saying "Roborace" festooned its body. The vehicle was operated not by a human driver but by artificial intelligence. Teams participating in driverless robot racing events use the electric car, which can travel at speeds of up to 320kph.
Yandex's on-demand taxi service debuts its self-driving car project
Russia search and internet technology giant Yandex is showing off the self-driving vehicle prototype developed by its Yandex.Taxi on-demand ride service for the first time, and the video above is the first footage of the car in action. The prototype is meant to help Yandex test its software, which the company thinks it's uniquely well-positioned to develop for this emerging space. Yandex notes that it has navigation, geolocation, computer vision, and machine learning expertise from other ongoing products and services, including Yandex.Navigator and Yandex.Maps. "We use anonymised data that we receive from Yandex.Navigator users, which allows us to understand how to drive in a city with its traffic congestion, accidents, speed limits, road closures and other traffic events," Yandex.Taxi Head of PR Vladimir Isaev explained via email. "We have been using computer vision technologies in a number of our services for quite a while. We use them to find vacant parking spaces or read road signs, for instance, in our geolocation services."
Faster, more nimble drones on the horizon
There's a limit to how fast autonomous vehicles can fly while safely avoiding obstacles. That's because the cameras used on today's drones can only process images so fast, frame by individual frame. Beyond roughly 30 miles per hour, a drone is likely to crash simply because its cameras can't keep up. Recently, researchers in Zurich invented a new type of camera, known as the Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS), that continuously visualizes a scene in terms of changes in brightness, at extremely short, microsecond intervals. But this deluge of data can overwhelm a system, making it difficult for a drone to distinguish an oncoming obstacle through the noise.
