European Telecoms Firms Pin Hopes on 'Esports' Video Game Gladiators

U.S. News

None of the three companies has disclosed how much they have spent so far in Esports but Ignacio Martinez, who oversees Vodafone's Esports strategy in Spain, says it is the first time since he joined the industry 15 years ago that he sees telecoms companies rushing into a new market this way.

Far Cry 5's violent civil unrest is a much-needed reality check for games

The Guardian

There is an all-too familiar response when video game developers are asked if their latest project has any real-world meaning: hey, we're just making a game, we're not making a statement. It's a media-trained kneejerk defence against potential controversy, a line dragged out time and time again when a producer or creative director is asked about seemingly clear parallels with genuine wars, events or issues. Last year, for example, video game site Killscreen spoke to the makers of The Division, a game about an apocalyptic terrorist attack on New York City. When asked if 9/11 had in any way inspired the setting and narrative, associate creative director Julian Gerighty seemed aghast at the comparison โ€“ and at the connection between the game and an actual incident. "At the end of the day, it's a video game," he said.

The Uncanny Valley of human-robot interactions

Robohub

The device named "Spark" flew high above the man on stage with his hands waving in the direction of the flying object. In a demonstration of DJI's newest drone, the audience marveled at the Coke can-sized device's most compelling feature: gesture controls. Instead of a traditional remote control, this flying selfie machine follows hand movements across the sky. Gestures are the most innate language of mammals, and including robots in our primal movements means we have reached a new milestone of co-existence. Madeline Gannon of Carnegie Mellon University is the designer of Mimus, a new gesture controlled robot featured in an art installation at The Design Museum in London, England.

Google could face a $9bn EU fine for rigging search results in its favour

The Independent - Tech

EU antitrust regulators aim to slap a hefty fine on Alphabet unit Google over its shopping service before the summer break in August, two people familiar with the matter said, setting the stage for two other cases involving the US company. The European Commission's decision will come after a seven-year investigation into the world's most popular internet search engine was triggered by scores of complaints from both US and European rivals. The EU competition authority accused Google in April 2015 of distorting internet search results to favour its shopping service, harming both rivals and consumers. The Commission and Google declined to comment. The US company has in the past rejected the charges, saying that regulators ignored competition from online retailers Amazon and eBay.

Snapchat Spectacles on sale in UK: What are they, where to buy them, how much do they cost?

Snapchat Spectacles have just launched in the UK. The high-tech glasses let you record short videos with the push of a button, without having to get your phone out of your pocket. Can a period tracking chatbot pave the way to a women's health AI?

#artificialintelligence

When I first told to one of my girlfriends that our chatbot would do period tracking, her smile disappeared from her face. She asked why would anybody still do period tracking anywhere in the era of so many other applications that focus on women and their reproductive health. Well, I think the market is still underserved and there are still many opportunities, and one leads to creating a mix of a friend and a virtual gynaecologist using AI. Let's face it: we are absolutely not living in an equal world. As much as we fought to have this freedom and rights, we still have a lot to do.

The Brain as Computer: Bad at Math, Good at Everything Else

#artificialintelligence

Painful exercises in basic arithmetic are a vivid part of our elementary school memories. A multiplication like 3,752 6,901 carried out with just pencil and paper for assistance may well take up to a minute. Of course, today, with a cellphone always at hand, we can quickly check that the result of our little exercise is 25,892,552. Indeed, the processors in modern cellphones can together carry out more than 100 billion such operations per second. What's more, the chips consume just a few watts of power, making them vastly more efficient than our slow brains, which consume about 20 watts and need significantly more time to achieve the same result. Of course, the brain didn't evolve to perform arithmetic.

Alexa can remind you to pick up the dry-cleaning

Engadget

Amazon has begun rolling out a couple of upgrades for Alexa, and while they might sound pretty minor, they could make the voice assistant more helpful for every day tasks. If you're in the US, you'll soon receive an update for your Echo speaker (if you haven't yet) that gives Alexa the capability to set reminders. For example, you can say "Alexa, remind me to pick up the dry cleaning on Thursday at 5PM" or "Alexa, remind me to pay rent June 1 at 10AM." When that time comes, the speaker's blue ring will light up, and Alexa will remind you of what you need to do. You can view all the reminders you set in the Alerts & Alarms section if you want to see your itinerary or to change it up.

OpEd: Software Is Not Just Eating the World -- But Capitalism, Too - The New Stack

#artificialintelligence

Capitalism is predicated on the production of goods and services. The difference between the cost of producing these goods and services and the revenue they generate is called profit, which is delivered back to shareholders. In order to increase profit, owners of capital try to innovate so that the same amount of goods and services can be created with fewer and fewer workers. However, if there are fewer and fewer workers, there is less cash in the economy for the purchase of goods and services. This is what Marx called an inherent contradiction of capitalism -- a contradiction that would one day lead to its replacement by socialism.
