Build a chatbot in 2 hours! - SC5

#artificialintelligence

Simple forms of artificial intelligence, or AI, are taking over many human duties. Chatbots are one quickly emerging application of AI. Given a well constrained domain of operation, chatbots can already provide a solution for the needs of customer service or simple transactions such as "I need to book a meeting room ASAP". What does it take to build a chatbot in 2 hours? At SC5, we favor a rapid prototyping and lean development approach in all our software creations.

How a Solar Drone Can Solve Hunger - Impakter

#artificialintelligence

In late February, the UN-Secretary General held a press conference, highlighting the risk of starvation in East Africa and the necessity to raise funds to address the emergency situations in Somalia and South Sudan. Drought has been back in these countries and their neighbours since 2016, leading to a huge current food crisis. While governments are trying to handle the situation, how could technology innovations help prevent starvation and improve agriculture management in the future? We met with Laurent Rivière, a French 30 years-old entrepreneur, who shared with us his view on the subject with a combination of engineer pragmatism and changemaker idealism . Founder and CEO at Sunbirds for two years, he explained to us how his "bird of the sun," his solar drone, is addressing the agriculture challenges of the 21st century.

The companies had poured $8.6 million into a campaign to keep fingerprinting, which can be expensive and time-consuming, out of driver checks. Uber and Lyft announced after the results of Saturday's vote that they were set to suspend operations in Austin, the capital city of Texas, on the morning of May 9, 2016.

Elon Musk claims AI will outperform humans by 2030

Daily Mail - Science & tech

While Elon Musk's opinions on artificial intelligence are no secret, the tech boss typically maintains somewhat of an air of mystery when it comes to more intimate subjects. But this week, Musk shed an amusing sliver of light on his personal preferences, telling the Twitterverse: 'f* underwear.' Along with the revelation, which included a'metaphor for transparency,' the Tesla & SpaceX CEO shared some new insight on AI, warning that technology could outperform humans decades sooner than recent studies have estimated. While Elon Musk's opinions on artificial intelligence are no secret, the tech boss typically maintains somewhat of an air of mystery when it comes to more intimate subjects. Referencing a study that circulated last week, which claimed AI will become better than humans at all tasks by the year 2060, Musk explained that this shift could be more imminent than scientists think, as AI capabilities grow at an accelerating pace.

iPhone 8: Augmented reality could be biggest feature of new iPhone, after WWDC announcements

The Independent - Tech

Apple might have quietly shown off the biggest feature of the iPhone 8. The company took to the stage at its WWDC event to show off new features on the iPad – an augmented reality suite that can magically put virtual cups of coffee onto real tables. It does that using the camera – it can understand what it's looking at, and then place virtual objects onto what the camera is showing. But while it appeared to work surprisingly well on the iPad, there have long been rumours that Apple is working on a phone with hardware specially made for such tasks. And it appears that Apple used the event to suggest to developers that they might want to start making software for it.

Time to stop panicking about artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Ryan Hagemann for the Niskanen Center: The fears over artificial intelligence, while at a very early stage, are an expected feature of the "techno-panics" associated with emerging technologies. As described in a paper from the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation's Daniel Castro and Alan McQuinn, these panics are part of a broader privacy panic cycle ... The cycle is composed of four stages: trusted beginnings, rising panic, deflating fears and moving on. So where are we with fears over AI? Based on the cross-ideological concerns, Mercatus senior research fellow Adam Thierer noted ... that we're still in the "rising panic" stage of the current AI hysteria. Unfortunately, we haven't yet reached peak hysteria. That boiling-over point, however, is probably coming sooner than a lot of people expect -- legislators, regulators, researchers and those techno-optimists who tout this technology's benefits should be prepared.

Depressed? Anxious? Woebot AI wants to help you help yourself

#artificialintelligence

I'm about to start a session with Woebot, billed as the first chatbot clinically shown to improve symptoms of depression and anxiety. Chatbots do everything these days, from helping people manage bank accounts and practice language skills to keeping them company when they can't sleep. But can an AI really get into my head the way a therapist would? Turns out Woebot, created by a Stanford University psychologist, is more about getting me into my own head -- and teaching me to better manage the chatter in there. Using brief daily conversations, mood tracking, curated videos and word games, the new bot relies on principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a short-term, goal-oriented treatment that aims to rewire the thoughts that negatively affect how we feel.

What Theresa May needs to do if she's going to regulate the internet

The Independent - Tech

Theresa May fiercely criticised technology companies in the wake of the London Bridge terror attack, but can't expect to achieve anything by making "one-sided" appeals, says a cybersecurity expert. She accused tech firms of providing terrorists with "safe spaces" online, and has called for the internet to be regulated. However, Ms May needs to ensure the protection of citizens' rights, before attempting to point the finger of blame at others.
