'Hyper Chariots' catapult car-sized capsules at 4000 mph

The ambitious Hyper Chariot concept uses roller coaster-type technology to catapult car-sized capsules through airless concrete tubes at five times the speed of sound - and more than five times faster than Elon Musk's Hyperloop. The hypersonic public transport system, presided over by Hollywood actor Matthew Modin, will be fully operational by 2040 with test centres opening next year, the founders claim. The apparent public transport of the future will accelerate from 0 to 1,000mph (1,600 km/h) in just 60 seconds and will reach an astonishing top speed of 4,000mph (6,400 km/h). A spokesman for Hyper Chariot said tickets for the eight minute journey would be'highly competitive', with fares for London to Edinburgh costing around £100 ($127).

Creative Destruction Lab, a technology program affiliated with the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management in Toronto, Canada hopes to nurture numerous quantum learning machine start-ups in only a few years. This still new form of hybrid computing combines the computational speed and power of quantum computers with machine learning, the technical term for AI like Siri or Alexa. Currently, researchers are mostly focused using the emergent technology of quantum computers to help machine learning programs to solve problems quicker or to use typical machine learning builds to add stability and potency to quantum computers. However, the end goal of either direction is to use many AI programs based on quantum computers to comprehend or better datasets and results from larger quantum calculations. Unfortunately, this goal will not be achieved until quantum computers are fully built and operational.

Boeing set to start testing self-flying planes

Boeing is set to start testing self-flying planes, the company has revealed. It says it wants to develop autonomous aircraft, which would be capable of navigating themselves without any input from a human pilot. Planes can already take off, cruise and land with minimal human assistance, but Boeing wants to go a step further. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Unfortunately, they are not the only ones who want a piece of this vast pool of computing power, which serves the world's largest particle physics laboratory. The hundreds of thousands of computers in CERN's grid are also a prime target for hackers who want to hijack those resources to make money or attack other computer systems. But rather than engaging in a perpetual game of hide-and-seek with these cyber intruders via conventional security systems, CERN scientists are turning to artificial intelligence to help them outsmart their online opponents. Current detection systems typically spot attacks on networks by scanning incoming data for known viruses and other types of malicious code.

In the wake of all the incidents, UK government ministers have accused social networks of not doing enough to combat extremist material. Prime minister Theresa May has announced tech companies who don't deal with terrorism related material may be fined under a new law she is planning. In response, Facebook, Google, and Twitter have hit back at suggestions they have not been doing enough.


EU Airplane-Style Drone Regulations May Be Issued By 2019

With drones getting more and more commonplace and the growing importance of regulating them, The European Commission recently proposed to put clear regulations in place for the use and ownership of drones within two years. "Drones mean innovation, new services for citizens, new business models and a huge potential for economic growth. We need the EU to be in the driving seat and have a safe drone services market up and running by 2019. The EU needs to take a leading role worldwide in developing the right framework for this market to flourish, by unleashing the benefits for key economic sectors," EU Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, said in the press release. The regulations, which will be worked out by the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research Joint Undertaking, will be employed across state lines and will apply to the European Union as a whole.

Conferences and trade shows, held in interesting locations around the world, can be entertaining, informative and an opportunity to explore new places, meet new people and renew acquaintances. Three recent examples: Xponential, the mostly defense-related unmanned land, sea and air show, held in Dallas; Innorobo, focused on service robotics, in Paris; and ICRA, the IEEE's premier robotics conference, in Singapore. The 2017 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), the IEEE's principle forum for robotics researchers to present their work, was held this year at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel and Convention Center in Singapore. ICRA continues to have the highest number of cited research papers in the robotics field of all the various global conferences (including IROS). In an IEEE/Spectrum review of that portion of the conference that was biomedical-related, a swallowable capsule robot capable of needle aspiration, guided by magnets, and an autonomous snake-like colonoscopy robot were two of the hits. Another reviewer found the rehab exoskeletons, haptic interfaces, modular robot components and many of the ROS-enabled solutions of merit.


BBC iPlayer now requires users to register and sign in

BBC iPlayer has started forcing people to sign in, in order to use the catch-up service. The corporation announced the move was coming last month, has now started putting its plans into action. Previously, iPlayer users were being notified by a pop-up message reading, "You'll soon need to sign in to watch. And we'll keep you signed in." Options to sign in and register appeared alongside that note, but users could also skip the process by clicking "I'll do it later". The option to skip has now vanished, meaning you'll be locked out of the BBC's online service unless you enter your details.


Global risk analysis gets an artificial intelligence upgrade with GeoQuant

The global risk analysis used by big banks, hedge funds, and governments to inform their decision-making around everything from foreign currency investment to foreign aid is getting the machine learning treatment with the launch of the new startup GeoQuant. In the months since the company launched its service, GeoQuant has accurately predicted increasing political stability in Italy and Mexico before a corresponding rise in the value of those countries' capital markets and a collapse in political stability in Brazil before markets fell in that country, according to chief executive Mark Rosenberg. "Large asset managers and large corporations increasingly recognize that political risk is a growing factor in this investment climate," says Rosenberg. The former head of product development at the global risk consulting firm, The Eurasia Group, Rosenberg had long wanted to come up with a simpler measurement tool for gauging political risk, but felt it would have eroded much of the value in the bespoke reports that companies like the Eurasia Group rely on for income. Like many entrepreneurs before him, Rosenberg thought the process could be automated with a bit of technology.
