The vast majority of us are living in an artificial intelligence (AI) bubble. Indeed, it seems like the very notion of AI has recently undergone something of a makeover. It wasn't too long ago that AI belonged to the realm of science fiction, whereas many have come to view it as a business imperative today. Now, consumer applications like Alexa and Siri hog the headlines, and people are falling over themselves to tell you how AI will forever change the way we work. The truth, though, is that most of this AI bubble is overhyped.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick resigned late Tuesday night from the company he cofounded in 2009. While he'll remain on the board of directors, Kalanick's departure comes after months, if not years, of reports of a toxic workplace culture, cutthroat business tactics, and the occasional public embarrassment. It's not clear who will replace Kalanick. But what is clear is that this person will have a lot to correct. If we're lucky, robots might steal our chores before they steal our jobs. Next on the list could be ironing, now that a humanoid robot has mastered the art of getting rid of creases. The robot, called TEO, is 1.8 metres tall and weighs about 80 kilograms. Since it came into being at the Carlos III University of Madrid, Spain, in 2012, TEO has learned to climb stairs and open doors. Now full-on domestication seems within its reach.
Hyper Chariot: 4,000mph pods could go from London to Edinburgh in 8 minutes, company claims
People could soon travel from London to Edinburgh in eight minutes, claims Hyper Chariot, a company that has announced its intention to build an extremely ambitious new transport system. It would be capable of reaching speeds of 4,000mph, and could also be emission-free and 100 per cent solar-powered, "thanks to the use of solar panels mounted on the outside of the tunnels", according to the company. It says it wants the network to be fully operational by 2040, and plans to unveil a working'proof of concept' demonstrator, called'The Velocitator', in 2021. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. In our previous article, in addition to defining cognitive A.I. (CAI), we asserted that it is crucial for businesses to start their planning and embracing of A.I. now. This article builds on that theme by highlighting the significant disruptions to industry that are on the horizon and proves that time is of the essence. Uber's toxic culture risks its driverless future too
So Uber's blowhard-in-chief Travis Kalanick is finally out, out as CEO -- after some of its most prominent investors put the squeeze on him to go (not just take a time out). Scandal after scandal has hammered the company in recent times, culminating in an external investigation into a corporate culture accused by a former female employee of being rife with sexism, aggression and inequality. Kalanick's aggressive style of management has been the Uber rule, not the exception -- and arguably, setting aside the current slew of internal scandals, the company has been taking a more emollient approach, at least vis-a-vis business expansion. Working to change rules, for sure, but not always so publicly riding roughshod over them as it used to. Although in private the underhand tactics have evidently continued.
Creative AI makes epic dinosaur art by cleverly arranging pictures of flowers
Think machines can't be creative? This awesome use of artificial intelligence to make epic dinosaur art will make you question that assumption. Neural networks can do some awesome things, from allowing cars to drive on their own to instantly translating dozens of languages. But when it comes to our personal favorite use cases, we're going with one recently engineered by Australian artist Chris Rodley. By combining a deep-learning algorithm, a book of dinosaur pictures, and a book of flower paintings, he's created some of the trippiest images this side of an M.C. "The tech that makes this work isn't mine, but was created by a team of researchers from Germany who published a paper on it two years ago," Rodley told Digital Trends. "The idea of the group, led by Leon Gatys, was to transfer an art style as represented in a sample print to a target photograph.
