3D imaging reveals Bryn Celli Ddu was bigger than thought
Archaeologists in Wales have used 3D digital modelling to shed new light on a strange prehistoric mound that aligns with the summer solstice. The 5,000-year-old Neolithic passage tomb known as'Bryn Celli Ddu' in Anglesey includes a stone cemetery that was important for prehistoric people for thousands of years. Using ground-penetrating radar, researchers have found rock art and monuments that date back thousands of years - suggesting this burial complex was much bigger than previously thought. Known as one of the most important archaeological sites in Britain, Bryn Celli Ddu was once constructed to protect and pay respect to the remains of ancestors. It was first discovered in 1865, reconstructed in 1920s and excavations in the last few years they have uncovered a prehistoric burial cairn above the ground.
Volunteers teach AI to spot slavery sites from satellite images
Online volunteers are helping to track slavery from space. A new crowdsourcing project aims to identify South Asian brick kilns โ frequently the site of forced labour โ in satellite images. This data will then be used to train machine learning algorithms to automatically recognise brick kilns in satellite imagery. If computers can pinpoint the location of possible slavery sites, then the coordinates could be passed to local non-governmental organisations to investigate, says Kevin Bales, who is leading the project at the University of Nottingham in the UK. South Asian brick kilns are notorious sites of modern-day slavery.
Kalashnikov reveals first ever drone to go with its AK-47s
Gunmakers of the world's most deadly firearm has unveiled its first ever spy-in-the-sky drone and is planning on rolling it out for public sale. The Kalashnikov Group famous for the AK-47 will officially reveal what it is describing as a noiseless unmanned reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft at next month's MAKS international air show near Moscow. It has a four hour flying time and can be launched by hand as Vladimir Putin's biggest weapons maker takes a step back from its AK-47 - a rifle that has killed more people than any other firearm on the planet. The Kalashnikov Group's state-of-the-art drone which is said to be completely noiseless The drone weighs 7.5 kilograms and also boasts vertical takeoff capability. Reportedly, three types of noiseless drone to be released onto the market by the weapon manufacturing giant.
Nasa's Curiosity rover spots rock 'circle' on Mars
A mysterious circular rock formation on the surface of Mars has been captured by one of NASA's Orbiters. The formation was photographed by the Curiosity Rover this week and has excited alien hunters who invited speculation over how it came to be online. They suggested that the rocks were'arranged', laid out by another form of life, or that it was part of a larger, buried structure which has never before been seen. Cray Moves to Lasso 'Big Data Deluge' EE Times
LAKE WALES, Fla. โ Cray Inc. Tuesday (June 20) launched a free, downloadable analytics software suite for it's Intel Xeon powered high-end Urika-XC line of supercomputers at the International Supercomputer Conference (ISC 2017) in Frankfurt, Germany. "All the software in the Big Data Analytics Software Suite is downloadable for the Cray UrikaXC," Tim Barr, Cray's director of analytics and artificial intelligence product strategy, told EE Times in exclusive interview. "We only charge you for maintenance and installation if you want those services from Cray." Cray said its Big Data Analytics Software Suite will accelerate visualization, machine learning, deep learning, weather forecasting, seismic imaging, manufacturing CAE (computer aided design), scientific analysis, climate science, chemistry and materials science, large-scale graph discovery, cancer cell morphology, fraud- and insider-threat detection. However, any application that has to run analytics on large data sets, from sensors to on-line transactions, can benefit, according to Barr. Cray's UrikaXC supercomputers do not need the massively parallel Xeon Phi or Nvidia graphic processing units (GPUs) to get the most out of its Big Data Analytics Software Suite, said Barr, but works with Intel Xeon multi-core processors, the models of which depend on the XC model you choose. The components of the Big Data Analytics Software Suite include Cray's own Graph Engine (which includes the some of the company's fastest graph theoretic algorithms available today), the Apache Spark world-famous analytics environment, the BigDL distributed deep learning framework for Spark, the distributed Dask parallel computing libraries for analytics, and widely-used languages for analytics including Python, Scala, Java, and R. All are open source, but for a fee Cray will provide full support for the software suite, including a software subscription that includes maintenance, updates and technical support from Cray.

Hampshire, UK: 9th May 2017: A new study from Juniper Research has found that chatbots will redefine the customer service industry, with healthcare and banking sectors set to benefit the most. The new research, Chatbots: Retail, eCommerce, Banking & Healthcare 2017-2022, forecasts that chatbots will be responsible for cost savings of over $8 billion per annum by 2022, up from $20 million this year. Juniper expects dramatic cost savings to be made in the healthcare and banking sectors, as enquiry resolution times are reduced and cost savings boosted. Research author Lauren Foye explained: "We believe that healthcare and banking providers using bots can expect average time savings of just over 4 minutes per enquiry, equating to average cost savings in the range of $0.50-$0.70 per interaction. As Artificial Intelligence advances, reducing reliance on human representatives undoubtedly spells job losses."

When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight, your FedEx package might someday be delivered by a robot. Rob Carter, FedEx's chief information officer, says the shipping giant is considering small vehicles that could drive around neighborhoods and make deliveries without human drivers. Carter is responsible for setting the technology agenda across FedEx's various operating companies, including its planes-and-trucks Express shipping service and office-and-home Ground delivery service, which operate in 220 countries. He recently told MIT Technology Review about some of FedEx's emerging technology initiatives in artificial intelligence and robotics. The investments FedEx makes in these technologies could shape the multi-trillion-dollar logistics market, affecting everything from the way people send and receive parcels to the global movement of large fleets of vehicles.
