Haunting photographs reveal the dark story of eugenics

These are the horrifying photos from the heyday of the Eugenics movement that the world wants to forget. Before the atrocities of Nazi Germany, eugenics - the system of measuring human traits, seeking out the desirable ones and cutting out the undesirable ones - was once practised the world over. In the decades following the 1859 publication of Charles Darwin's'On the Origin of Species', a veritable craze for eugenics spread through Britain, the United States and Europe. Bruno Beger was a German racial anthropologist who worked for the Ahnenerbe, a project in Nazi Germany to research the archaeological and cultural history of the Aryan race. In this image taken in 1938, Dr Beger is measuring a Tibetan woman's head to demonstrate what he believed were the'inferior' characteristics of her race Advocates of eugenics made significant advances during the early twentieth century - and claimed that'undesirable' genetic traits such as dwarfism, deafness and even minor defects like a cleft palate needed to be wiped out of the gene pool.


'Thousands' of MPs and police officers hit by password hack linked to Russia

The passwords of thousands of British politicians, senior police officers and other top officials have been stolen and traded by hackers, it has been reported. The login details of education secretary Justine Greening and business secretary Greg Clark are believed to be some of those that were reportedly exchanged by Russian hackers. The head of IT at the Foreign Office, the director-general of the Department for Exiting the European Union and former detective chief inspector Andy Redwood were also reportedly affected. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Google's multitasking neural net can juggle eight things at once

Deep-learning systems tend to be one-trick wonders: they're great at the task they've been trained to do, but pretty awful at everything else. Now a new neural network from Google suggests that AI can be taught to multitask after all. Most deep-learning systems are built to solve specific problems, such as recognising animals in photos from the Serengeti or translating between languages. But if you take, for instance, an image-recognition algorithm and then retrain it to do a completely different task, such as recognising speech, it usually becomes worse at its original job. Humans don't have that issue.


Learnings for artificial intelligence meets sales Hackathon

I arranged an AI hackathon at Aalto University in Helsinki. We started with the Sales Opportunity Qualification assignment. The business problem many B2B sales organisations have is low hit rate, especially in businesses with long sales cycles (3 to 24 months) and high cost of sales (thousands or tens of thousands Euro and multiple people participating solution design, proposal development, negotiations and so on). Typically sales organisations have very little data and facts about the sales process, even less about how customers make decisions (etc. We presented a data set of 200 sales opportunities; 150 lost and 50 won opportunities.


MK's network of AI sensors to monitor travel in real time

Artificial Intelligence (AI) sensors are to be installed at every major junction and council car park in Milton Keynes to monitor movement of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in real time. Around 2,500 sensors, provided by UK tech start-up Vivacity Lab, are due to be switched on early next year. The sensors will build up a picture of which areas of the town are most busy and at what times. "This will provide real-time congestion information that can help with strategic planning and journey planning," said Geoff Snelson, director of strategy & futures at Milton Keynes Council. Data of real-time movements could be used to manage the networks through roadside information or feeds to apps, said Snelson at the Imagine Festival in Milton Keynes, organised by the Transport Systems Catapult.

CAPE CANAVERAL, FL––It's been almost three months since SpaceX sent a Falcon 9 roaring on its second flight through the skies off Florida's space coast. On a Thursday in March, the spaceflight company became the first to recover, refurbish, and relaunch an orbital-class rocket. The event marked a watershed moment for an aerospace industry that has been disposing these complex and insanely expensive launch vehicles for over 60 years. Friday, SpaceX will attempt the feat again. SpaceX plans to launch another recovered booster from the history-worn Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center--what CEO Elon Musk calls the'Times Square' of launch pad, thanks to its service during the Apollo and Space Shuttle era.


Facebook launches initiative with husband of murdered MP Jo Cox to challenge hate speech

Facebook is encouraging users to counter hate speech online, with the UK launch of its Online Civil Courage Initiative (OCCI) in the UK. The social network says it wants to promote "the civil courage displayed by organisations and grassroots activists", in order to tackle online extremism. Technology companies were fiercely criticised by Theresa May in the wake of the London Bridge terror attack, and were accused of providing terrorists with "safe spaces" online. Facebook was quick to defend its efforts, but has since tried to step them up. PSA Group semi-autonomous cars arrive this year; full autonomy in 2020

The PSA Group's first fully-autonomous cars will reach market in 2020, after semi-autonomous systems are offered on the DS 7 Crossback next year. The first PSA car with'hands-off' Level 2 autonomous system will be the DS 7 Crossback SUV, which is due for launch early in 2018. The Citroën C5 Aircross will follow suit in the second half of 2018 after launching in China at the end of this year. Equipped with a Level 2 system called Connected Pilot, the 7 Crossback will be capable of maintaining lane and choosing station to the left or right of the lane to allow cycles or motorcycles to pass. It will also be equipped with self-parking without any intervention by the driver, initiated by pressing a button on the centre console.

We're still uneasy about the idea that Artificial Intelligence could be eavesdropping on our conversations through smart home devices, but what if AI is watching us, too? As unsettling as this might sound, AI computing company NVIDIA plans to set up over a billion AI cameras by 2020. Their new venture is called Metropolis, and can interpret a staggering 30 billion images per second. In future they plan to install these cameras in surveillance drones and robots. Following a $4 billion investment from SoftBank, NVIDIA are well placed to deliver a quality solution to current security camera issues.


Nissan teases self-driving features for the next-gen Leaf

The next generation Leaf EV will be the first with ProPilot driver assist in North American and Europe, and Nissan has just showed how that will look. Activated by a button on the steering wheel, it can control steering, braking and acceleration, but only in a single freeway lane. The driver can see exactly what's going on with the aid of a fancy animation front and center in the largely digital dashboard. Automakers' self-driving systems will always be compared to Tesla, whose Autopilot is the most advanced available commercially. In Nissan's case, the ProPilot will help with boring highway cruising, but is a far cry from the semi-automatic Autopilot.
