For many years as a child, I did nothing but play with Lego. Eventually I had children of my own, who had a nice Lego collection themselves, but nothing you'd need machinery to sort. That changed after a trip to Legoland in Denmark. I noticed adults at the park buying Lego in vast quantities, despite its high price. Even second-hand Lego isn't cheap, sold as it is by the part on specialized websites, or by the boxed set and in bulk on eBay.

Delta Air Lines wants to be your wingman -- a slightly dishonest wingman, but a wingman nonetheless. The Atlanta-based airline has recently teamed up with Tinder to transform the exterior of Brooklyn building into a "dating wall" covered in worldly murals depicting nine different Delta destinations. According to a press release, the idea is for Brooklynites to snap photos near the murals, upload them to their dating profiles, and trick unsuspecting Tinder dates into thinking they're more well-traveled than they actually are. Delta is helping New Yorkers fake their profile photos.


Synthetic iris could let cameras react to light like our eyes do

An artificial iris can open and close in response to sunlight without any other outside control, just like the ones in your eyes. This could help improve cameras and, eventually, repair damaged human eyes or control tiny robots that react to their surroundings. In the eyes of humans and many other animals, the pupil is a hole that lets light inside the eyeball. The iris is the coloured part of your eye, a thin circle that controls the size of the pupil, modulating how much light gets through. In bright light, the iris contracts to shrink the pupil, protecting the sensitive retina inside your eye, which sends visual signals to the brain.

Amazon has applied for a patent that gives more insight into the infrastructure it may be planning for its drone delivery program, Amazon Prime Air. In this case, the drones would take off, land and pick up deliveries from a tower placed in densely populated cities that would house the drones. It looks a lot like a bee hive.


Learning Tree-Structured Detection Cascades for Heterogeneous Networks of Embedded Devices

In this paper, we present a new approach to learning cascaded classifiers for use in computing environments that involve networks of heterogeneous and resource-constrained, low-power embedded compute and sensing nodes. We present a generalization of the classical linear detection cascade to the case of tree-structured cascades where different branches of the tree execute on different physical compute nodes in the network. Different nodes have access to different features, as well as access to potentially different computation and energy resources. We concentrate on the problem of jointly learning the parameters for all of the classifiers in the cascade given a fixed cascade architecture and a known set of costs required to carry out the computation at each node.To accomplish the objective of joint learning of all detectors, we propose a novel approach to combining classifier outputs during training that better matches the hard cascade setting in which the learned system will be deployed. This work is motivated by research in the area of mobile health where energy efficient real time detectors integrating information from multiple wireless on-body sensors and a smart phone are needed for real-time monitoring and delivering just- in-time adaptive interventions. We apply our framework to two activity recognition datasets as well as the problem of cigarette smoking detection from a combination of wrist-worn actigraphy data and respiration chest band data.

It introduces some recently proposed techniques of interpretation, along with theory, tricks and recommendations, to make most efficient use of these techniques on real data. It also discusses a number of practical applications.

A third of Britain's schools are asking students to bring their own tablets and laptops into the classroom now, coding has been on the national curriculum for three years, and more and more education is happening outside school through apps and digital services. But these changes are just the start. Artificial intelligence (AI) is the next giant leap in learning and, according to those working in the field of education and technology, we haven't seen anything yet.
