Amazon patents beehive-like structure to house delivery drones in cities
If Amazon has its way, cities around the US will have vertical drone centers shaped like giant beehives in the middle of downtown districts, allowing the online retailer to coordinate speedy deliveries by unmanned aircrafts. The company has filed for a patent for "multi-level fulfillment centers" that would accommodate the landing and takeoff of drones in dense urban settings, the latest example of Amazon's futuristic vision of reshaping the way people receive packages. The application filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, which was written in 2015 and published last week, included a number of drawings of drones flying in and out of tall cylinder-shaped buildings that Amazon wants to locate in central metropolitan areas. The centers would allow Amazon to shift away from the traditional model of large single-story warehouses that temporarily store packages before they are shipped to customers. Those buildings are typically located on the outskirts of urban areas and are not convenient for deliveries into cities where populations continue to swell, the company noted.

Unlike manufacturing robots (the industrial machines we see on automated production lines and in manufacturing facilities) service robots require AI to operate in the real world and successfully perform tasks on request. Results from an Oxford University and Deloitte study stated that 35% of current jobs in the UK are at risk from automation - and that's not just in the manufacturing industry. For careers related to customer service, there's an even higher figure, with around 91% of jobs predicted to be lost to automation.
Kodi users face crackdown over illegal add-ons
Investigators could start exposing users of illegal add-ons for Kodi in "the very near future", the head of a major anti-piracy group has said. Accenture's top strategy tips for employing AI to boost profitability
According to a new report by consultancy firm Accenture, corporate profitability is in decline across most industries in the United States โ and is also impacting investment and output in public services. After reaching their highest share of national income in the post-war era, the growth of profits dropped from 25 percent in 2010 to -3 percent in 2015, the report states. It is not a rosy picture for the future if things carry on as they are. Indeed, the current data do not suggest an environment conducive to growth. Business investment is already close to stalling. For instance, in manufacturing business investment growth has declined from 14.8 percent in 2012 to -5.2 percent in 2016 in the United States and from 5.9 percent in 2012 to -6.6 percent in 2016 in the United Kingdom .
Two drones see through walls in 3D using WiFi signals
Transmit and receive drones perform 3D imaging through walls using WiFi (credit: Chitra R. Karanam and Yasamin Mostofi/ACM) Researchers at the University of California Santa Barbara have demonstrated the first three-dimensional imaging of objects through walls using an ordinary wireless signal. Applications could include emergency search-and-rescue, archaeological discovery, and structural monitoring, according to the researchers. Other applications could include military and law-enforcement surveillance. In the research, two octo-copters (drones) took off and flew outside an enclosed, four-sided brick structure whose interior was unknown to the drones. One drone continuously transmitted a WiFi signal; the other drone (located on a different side of the structure) received that signal and transmitted the changes in received signal strength ("RSSI") during the flight to a computer, which then calculated 3D high-resolution images of the objects inside (which do not need to move). Interestingly, the equipment is all commercially available: two drones with "yagi" antenna, WiFi router, Tango tablet (for real-time localization), and Raspberry Pi computer with network interface to record measurements.
Is Amazon getting too big?
SAN FRANCISCO โ When Amazon made a bid for Whole Foods earlier this month, a company that's been a huge but largely online presence for consumers suddenly seemed to be everywhere, raising the question, "Is it getting too big?" In most of the areas Amazon has recently entered, be they groceries or streaming video or India, Amazon is far from dominant. But some observers fear that as Amazon's breadth grows, the power of its ecosystem could stifle competition and erode jobs. "Imagine getting your pay-TV service, groceries, banking, insurance, etc. all through one company. That's the threat that Amazon poses," said Michael Greeson, director of research at business analysis firm The Diffusion Group.

Long range autonomous vehicles are expected between 2020 and 2025, with some estimates suggesting fully autonomous vehicles will take over by 2030.
Google is close to a breakthrough in quantum computing
The world's most powerful quantum computer processor could be created by Google, if research underway at the firm pays off. The company is currently testing a quantum processor more than twice as powerful as its previously announced chip, and claims it will be ready by the end of 2017. If successful, the processor could lead to computers capable of solving scientific mysteries that would take ordinary computers billions of years to compute. Google claims it will have a working quantum chip, powerful enough to out perform conventional computers, by the end of 2017. The heart of modern computing is binary code, which has served computers for decades.
