Scaling Wimbledon's video production of highlight reels through AI technology - IBM Blog Research
Demonstrating the continual innovation that takes place around its major sporting events, IBM Research and IBM iX are teaming up to provide "Cognitive Highlights" to The Championships, Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the world, to demonstrate how AI technology can scale and accelerate the video production process for any media, sports or entertainment company. It was in April that IBM Research and IBM iX first explored this project, creating the first ever multi-modal system for analyzing golf video for the 2017 Masters Golf Tournament. The proof-of-concept brought together computer vision and other leading AI technologies to listen, watch and learn from a live video feed of the golf tournament and automatically identify and curate the most exciting moments and shots into segments that could be used in online highlight packages. The solution for Wimbledon will go beyond selecting and curating individual segments for a video editor to choose from, to automatically creating a one to two minute highlights package of matches for the Wimbledon editorial team's use across the Wimbledon Digital Platforms, and which will be available shortly after each match. Moreover, instead of a four-day tournament at The Masters, IBM will contend with a 13-day championship at The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club that starts next Monday July 3rd.
Artificial intelligence could boost the UK's household spending power
While some workers are worrying about how artificial intelligence (AI) could cause them to lose their jobs, a new study has shown that it could be a welcome boost to the economy. Research from PwC indicates that UK gross domestic product (GDP) could be 10 per cent higher by 2030 as a result of AI, increasing individual household spending power by up to £2,300 per year. This GDP increase would be the equivalent of an additional £232bn, making AI the biggest commercial opportunity in today's economy. "While we expect that the nature of jobs will change and that some will be susceptible to automation, our research shows the boost to UK GDP that AI-driven products and services will bring will also generate significant offsetting job gains, as well as boosting average real wage levels," said PwC economist Jonathan Gillham. Out of the UK regions, England stands to gain the most with GDP expected to be up 10.6 per cent.

WASHINGTON – Across their three presidential debates last year, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump uttered the word "jobs" 86 times – but the word "automation" never came up. And by all accounts, nothing is going to transform the American labor market more dramatically, and likely for the worse, than the increasing trend toward automation: on assembly lines, in self-driving cars, even clerical and white-collar positions once considered unthinkable for robots to occupy. Credible projections now forecast that 40 percent of all jobs in the United States today could be eliminated by 2030, just 13 years from now, have led futurists, labor market analysts, and leading CEOs to ask what will become of all the workers soon to be displaced by technology, and whether industrialized democratic societies, seeking stability in such a radically reshaped economic environment, might benefit from some orderly redistribution of wealth. And leading the charge are two of America's most prominent titans of the digital age. In a commencement address to graduates at Harvard University last month, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said the coming wave of automation and displacement will require "a new social contract" between the government and the governed.
Light-powered 'robot' cleans while it crawls
Scientists in the UK and Netherlands have developed the first-ever device that can "walk" along like a caterpillar using a single, constant light source for power. The concept is clever: A polymer material is installed in a frame shorter than itself to create a bulge. By shining a concentrated, violet LED on the front of the bulge, it contracts, exposing the next part of the strip to the light. That creates a continuous, relatively powerful movement that could be used to "transport small items in hard-to-reach places or to keep the surfaces of solar cells clean," the team says. The trick relies on a light-sensitive liquid-crystal material that changes shape very quickly in the presence of light.
DNP Tour de France 2017 to use AI to predict race outcomes
The 104th edition of the race will see the Tour carry out a pilot machine learning program that will aim to predict the likelihood of various race scenarios. For example, the data could help researchers glean whether the peloton (the main pack of riders) will catch the breakaway riders at certain stages of the race. Using GPS transponders, installed under the saddles of each bike, a whopping 3 billion data points will be collected throughout the 21 stages of the Tour. These insights will be combined with external data (such as the course gradient and weather conditions) to bring viewers a range of breaking stats, including live speed and the location of individual riders, distance between riders, and composition of groups within the race. The hub for this information will be a cloud-based data centre, which will relay stats to broadcasters, allowing them to tell you even more about your favorite teams or riders.
