At the Empa and Eawag NEST building in Dübendorf, eight ETH Zurich professors as part of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication are collaborating with business partners to build the three-storey DFAB HOUSE. It is the first building in the world to be designed, planned and built using predominantly digital processes. Robots that build walls and 3D printers that print entire formworks for ceiling slabs – digital fabrication in architecture has developed rapidly in recent years. As part of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication, architects, robotics specialists, material scientists, structural engineers and sustainability experts from ETH Zurich have teamed up with business partners to put several new digital building technologies from the laboratory into practice. Construction is taking place at NEST, the modular research and innovation building that Empa and Eawag built on their campus in Dübendorf to test new building and energy technologies under real conditions.

Ultimately I built two'ensembles' of models. The first ensemble I built really in an ad-hoc manner - during the process of tuning my neural net structure I trained a bunch of models. Many of them turned out to have similar performance, so I threw them all into an ensemble. This ensemble had a CV score of 0.41 (remember the prior best was 0.433 - averaging helps!). A UK hospital did not do enough to protect the privacy of patients when it shared data with Google, the UK's Information Commission (ICO) has ruled. The ICO censured the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust about data handed over during trials of a novel way to detect kidney injuries. Among other failings, the ICO said the hospital did not tell patients enough about the way their data was used. The trust said it would tackle "shortcomings" in its data-handling. Details on about 1.6 million patients was provided to Google's DeepMind division during the early stages of the medical trial last year.

Fire up an app, order some groceries, and get them delivered to your door. But in one part of London, that kind of delivery is currently being made by a self-driving van. The deliveries are made possible by a vehicle called CargoPod, which was developed by Oxbotica, an autonomous-vehicle spinoff of the University of Oxford, and makes use of the online grocery retailer Ocado's infrastructure. It's a small electric vehicle decked out with lidar sensors and stereo cameras, which uses Oxbotica's autonomy software to sense obstacles and navigate roads without human intervention. A SpaceX Dragon capsule that brought supplies to the International Space Station has splashed down as planned in the Pacific Ocean. SpaceX announced on Twitter that the Dragon hit the water off the California coast shortly after 5 a.m. After being released by the space station's robotic arm, the capsule completed a 5½-hour journey back to Earth. SpaceX will recover the spacecraft and take it back to California. Cargo from the space station will be sent to NASA for analysis.
