Much of the focus on artificial intelligence has been on the impact that task automation will have on jobs. While PwC expects that the nature of jobs will change and that some will be susceptible to automation, their newest research, Sizing the prize, shows that AI-driven products and services will also generate significant economic value, offsetting job gains, as well as boosting productivity and average wage levels. Organisations still need to develop approaches to embed AI responsibly into our workplaces and to secure the right talent to make the most of the opportunities created. MARGINALIA spoke with PwC's AI Programme Leader, Rob McCargow (pictured right), to explore the key findings from their new report. McCargow is deeply involved in the IEEE Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems, and so shares important ethical considerations and advice around how to maximise AI efforts in a way that benefit the enterprise, its people, and the society.

Prosthetic limbs have changed very little in the past 100 years, according to doctors familiar with prosthetics. But a new bionic hand developed at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom has the potential to change that. The bionic hand is fitted with a camera which instantaneously takes a picture of the object in front of it, assesses its shape and size and triggers a series of movements in the hand. The project, described in the Journal of Neural Engineering this week, is led by biomedical engineers at Newcastle University and it is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

An international partnership on cybersecurity can mean many things--it can mean mutual assistance with enforcement and criminal investigations, or sharing threat information and intelligence, or jointly developing software that can be used to target adversaries' computer systems, or even jointly developing tools and techniques that can be used to detect and mitigate threats. An "impenetrable" unit hints most closely at the last of these functions--a defensive joint effort in which the two countries share not just intelligence but also technical expertise and controls to protect their systems against intruders. But people who help design and implement your defenses then know an awful lot about the way your systems work and how, precisely, they are protected. Possibly, they're even writing code and giving it to you to download on your computers to help make them more impenetrable. And if that code also created backdoors on every computer it was installed on so that Russia had easy access to control those systems, who would be surprised?

"This is a collaborative endeavor that anyone could get involved in," says Chris Lintott, an Oxford University astrophysicist and cofounder of Zooniverse, a platform that hosts dozens of citizen science projects. Seatris, web-based restaurant management software from Germany, is introducing its machine learning technology in Thailand as part of the company's business expansion efforts in Asean market. The company's machine learning technology has been applied to what they call "smart table", which includes online booking and an automatic waitlist system. The technology is touted to boost efficiency for restaurants. Seatris has now opened its doors to fine and casual dining restaurants as well as hotels in Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Delivery drones are just another brick in the automation wall that's hurtling towards us all. If (when) they come into popular use they have massive potential to disrupt current logistical methods across a number of industries. There are a whole bunch of pro's and con's, but at the rate they are being developed it seems that the broad mantra is that automated delivery, speed and convenience, even if there is a cost, is "what people want". The Brandwatch React team looked to social data to see if we could verify whether or not delivery drones were something people looked forward to experiencing or something, like autonomous cars, that's discussed with more skepticism. We tracked around 64,000 mentions of delivery drones, and related terms, across social media from 1 May to 27 June 2017. They fluctuated enormously by day, from 200 to 5,000 mentions, with spikes occurring when big news stories about developments occurred.

People across the world are being tricked by a hoax message apparently warning them about hackers. The message is being spread . But it is a hoax, and there is no such hackers. Despite that, the warning does contain an important truth: that hackers could add you on Facebook and get access to much of your most personal information, and do serious damage.
