Put it down to the enduring cultural impact of David Hasselhoff, but the country of Angela Merkel is almost single-handedly saving Baywatch from box-office infamy. It's not the first time a movie has struck an unexpected chord somewhere far from home, as these examples demonstrate. An ambitious $160m (£124m) adaptation of an ailing online video game, Warcraft was conceived as the first instalment of a trilogy set in the magical realm of Azeroth, telling a generation-spanning tale of displaced orcs and angry sorcerers. In some countries it even came billed as Warcraft: The Beginning.


Donald Trump sued for blocking people on Twitter

Donald Trump is being sued because of his behaviour on Twitter. The president's unprecedented Twitter use – which he has said is "modern day presidential" – has landed him a range of criticism in recent weeks. But the new lawsuit actually focuses not on his tweets but something else more private: his blocking critics on the site. The new case argued that it is unconstitutional to stop people following him on Twitter. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Bought for €100, World War II Enigma machine fetches €45,000 at auction

BUCHAREST – Someone in Romania thought he'd made a fair amount of money when he sold an old typewriter for €100 ($115) at a flea market. The "typewriter" was, in fact, a German Wehrmacht Enigma I, a World War II cipher machine, and the collector who bought it put it up for sale at the Bucharest auction house Artmark with a starting price of €9,000. On Tuesday, Artmark sold it to an online bidder for €45,000. "The collector bought it from a flea market. He's a cryptography professor and … he knew very well what he was buying," said Cristian Gavrila, the collectible consignment manager at Artmark.

Researchers highlight how AI can support scientific exploration

Science offers one of the more interesting areas that could be impacted by the use of artificial intelligence, and I've written before about its use in enhancing medical research. A nice example of this in action comes via a couple of chemists from the University of Basel. In a recent paper they describe how AI was used to explore the characteristics of crystals as they hunt for those with certain thermodynamic properties. Crystals are commonly used in electronics because their application as both a semi-conductor and insulator.

DeepMind Has Taught an AI to Do Something Quite Remarkable

Google's artificial intelligence (AI) subsidiary DeepMind has released a paper detailing how its AI agents have taught themselves to navigate complex virtual environments, and the results are weird, wonderful, and often extremely funny. The agents in the simulations were programmed with a set of sensors-- these allowed them to know things like when they were upright or if their leg was bent -- and a drive to continue moving forward. Everything else that you see in the video -- the agents' jumping, running, using knees to scale obstacles, etc. -- is the result of the AI working out how best to continue moving forward through reinforcement learning. The complexity of the agents' movements is a testament to how far AI has come in recent years. While agents in simulations like these often break down when faced with unfamiliar environments, DeepMind's have utilized startlingly sophisticated movements to traverse obstacles.
