Windows 10: Users need to buy new computers to access any new features, Microsoft confirms

A number of PCs have been blocked from installing all future Windows 10 updates, Microsoft has confirmed. In order to access any new features Microsoft creates and releases to improve the operating system, affected users will need to purchase new computers. It's a major blow, which essentially places users in limbo. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. A "gaping hole" in Facebook's account recovery feature lets anyone easily break into an account, says a security researcher. They don't need to know your password to gain access, and can do it without you ever noticing. However, if they wanted to, they could also choose to lock you out of your own account. A beacon of light for artificial intelligence

"The Max Planck Society has created a scientific beacon of light here which beams far and wide, attracting both emerging and established scientists from all over the world," remarked Max Planck President Martin Stratmann. The new building, which houses all three of the Institute's departments, was constructed between September 2014 and March 2017. It was funded by the federal state of Baden-Wรผrttemberg's government which places great emphasis on research into intelligent systems: "With its Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tรผbingen and Stuttgart, the Max Planck Society has firmly established one of the key research fields in the digital transformation in Baden-Wรผrttemberg," indicated Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann. "The federal state has contributed โ‚ฌ 41 million to the new building in Tรผbingen โ€“ this represents a sound investment which will help ensure that Baden-Wรผrttemberg remains a leading centre of research on artificial intelligence." The new building provides scientists with an outstanding environment in which to advance their theoretical and experimental research.


Feeling Stressed, Angry or Happy? New Tech Computes Your Emotions

Trying to handle and hide our true emotions is a challenge we all share as humans, and trying to discern what other people are hiding from us is something that fascinates us even more. Yet latest technological developments seem to signal that there is no place to hide anymore: Scientists at the University of Oulu in Finland have developed facial recognition software that can read human microexpressions at a success rate that beats humans at the same task. But what exactly are microexpressions? According to the Paul Ekman Group, founded by renowned psychologist Paul Ekman, who conducted groundbreaking research in the correlations between emotions and facial expressions โ€“ and has been dubbed "the best human lie detector in the world" in the process โ€“ microexpressions are "facial expressions that occur within 1/25th of a second and expose a person's true emotions". We make them involuntarily, even when we are trying to conceal our true emotional response. Perhaps more importantly, microexpressions are the same across all ages and genders, regardless of the person's unique cultural background, and they appear even when the subject is trying to hide their emotions without realizing they are doing so โ€“ in essence, when they are lying to themselves, too.

Resting state fMRI functional connectivity-based classification using a convolutional neural network architecture

Machine learning techniques have become increasingly popular in the field of resting state fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) network based classification. However, the application of convolutional networks has been proposed only very recently and has remained largely unexplored. In this paper we describe a convolutional neural network architecture for functional connectome classification called connectome-convolutional neural network (CCNN). Our results on simulated datasets and a publicly available dataset for amnestic mild cognitive impairment classification demonstrate that our CCNN model can efficiently distinguish between subject groups. We also show that the connectome-convolutional network is capable to combine information from diverse functional connectivity metrics and that models using a combination of different connectivity descriptors are able to outperform classifiers using only one metric. From this flexibility follows that our proposed CCNN model can be easily adapted to a wide range of connectome based classification or regression tasks, by varying which connectivity descriptor combinations are used to train the network.


The inflation technique solves completely the classical inference problem

The causal inference problem consists in determining whether a probability distribution over a set of observed variables is compatible with a given causal structure. In [arXiv:1609.00672], one of us introduced a hierarchy of necessary linear programming constraints which all the observed distributions compatible with the considered causal structure must satisfy. In this work, we prove that the inflation hierarchy is complete, i.e., any distribution of the observed variables which does not admit a realization within the considered causal structure will fail one of the inflation tests. More quantitatively, we show that any distribution of measurable events satisfying the $n^{th}$ inflation test is $O\left(\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}\right)$-close in Euclidean norm to a distribution realizable within the given causal structure. In addition, we show that the corresponding $n^{th}$-order relaxation of the dual problem consisting in maximizing a $k^{th}$ degree polynomial on the observed variables is $O\left(\frac{k^2}{n}\right)$-close to the optimal solution.
