Using machine learning to fight fraud may just be starting to see its day in the sun, but if industry trends are to be believed, it's fast becoming the soul of the global fraud fighting machine. From offering fraud protection to identity verification, machine learning is increasingly being used by companies small and large to build out their next generation of products. In the last month alone, the digital identity space has seen numerous players roll out upgrades to their tools and services, which are now being powered by deep learning algorithms. "We are in the business of solving the really hard problems" So said Shanker Trevedi, SVP Enterprise Business for the tech giant NVIDIA when he opened a day of presentations hosted at Odgers Berndtson's London office recently. The event was a showcase of disruptive start-ups innovating through AI and deep learning to tackle problems in the healthcare sector. The event was part of a series that Odgers Berndtson is running in partnership with technology company NVIDIA as part of their Inception Program. The programme aims to take start-ups using NVIDIA technology and machine learning to the next level of their success. Odgers Berndtson's partnership on the events – known as'Inception Connect' – aims to expose this innovation to new audiences.


Dogs Have Same Genes As Williams Beuren Syndrome Patients, And That Makes Them Friendly, Study Finds

We are familiar with the famous saying "dog is a man's best friend," but no one could figure out exactly why this particular animal carries the capability of being so friendly toward humans. According to a study published Wednesday, the reason behind humans and dogs striking a common cord might be because the latter descended from wolves. The study found that hyper-social canines carry variants of the genes GTF2I and GTF2IRD1, the deletion of which, in humans, triggers the Williams-Beuren Syndrome, or more commonly known as the Williams syndrome. Bridgett vonHoldt of Princeton University and her colleagues studied a portion of DNA in dogs that included 29 genes. They noticed that deletion of part or all of this section due to prolonged domestication seemed to cause the overtly friendly nature in dogs.

The company has made the claim as it shared the results of new efforts to make the platform a more safe place to be. The site has often been criticised for adding cosmetic new features without paying attention to the various ways that it enables and allows abuse. It says that new efforts to cut down on that abuse has led to positive results, and it has become much better at filtering them out. AI matches snaps to a database of over one million recipes

If you've ever seen a tasty-looking meal and wanted to know the recipe to make it, then help could be at hand. Scientists have created an AI, dubbed Pic2Recipe, that can find a recipe for you based a single picture of the finished dish. The AI was trained by looking at more than a million different recipes collected from various recipe websites. Its image recognition software was then taught to identify the type of food in a photo and match it with a recipe and ingredients list. Ever eaten a dish you didn't know them name of and wished you had the recipe so you could recreate it at home? Soon you might only need a picture of it. Researchers have devised a machine learning algorithm that looks at photos of food and predicts the recipe that created the dish. Nick Hynes at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his colleagues trained the algorithm on one million recipes, each with an illustration of the finished result, from dozens of cooking websites. Given a fresh photo of a dish, the system picked the right recipe 65 per cent of the time.

TSB launches iris scanning on its mobile app
