While online shopping has taken great strides in recent years, the brick-and-mortar retail hasn't managed to keep pace. Artificial intelligence now permeates every aspect of ecommerce platforms, especially where customer interactions are involved. Smart product suggestions, AI-powered search, cognitive customer service agents are just some of the innovations that have helped make online shopping more personalized and enjoyable for the customer--and more profitable for the retailer of course. Meanwhile, AI advances in brick-and-mortar retail have mostly remained in inventory management and back store operations. The few innovations that have happened in the customer-facing aspects of in-person retail have little or no AI involved, and have failed to make tangible positive impact in the shopping experience and gain wide adoption.

We all know how difficult, distracted and stroppy some teenagers can be. Now, new research has shown that dogs go through a similar'teenage' growing-up phase when they hit 8 months. The discovery comes after owners of hundreds of dogs that were tracked as they grew up reported'adolescent' behaviour at eight months. Teenagers can be difficult, distracted and stroppy. The research was aimed at spotting those that would be suitable for training as guide dogs.

OSLO--Two Norwegian companies are taking the lead in the race to build the world's first crewless, autonomously operated ship, an advance that could mark a turning point in seaborne trade. Dubbed by shipping executives the "Tesla of the Seas," the Yara Birkeland now under development is scheduled in late 2018 to start sailing fertilizer 37 miles down a fiord from a production facility to the port of Larvik. Using the Global Positioning System, radar, cameras and sensors, the electric ship is designed to navigate itself around other boat traffic and to dock on its own. The vessel will cost $25 million, about three times as much as a conventional container ship of its size, but its backers say without need for fuel or crew it promises to cut annual operating costs by up to 90%. The 100-container ship is scheduled to be in the water toward the end of next year, though initially it will be tested with a human at the controls.

A second year master's student in psychology, she is working on a scientific literature review about the characteristics of high-functioning autistic women. The description we'll give could be that of any woman who is on the autistic spectrum without knowing it. Because they're intelligent and used to compensating for communication impediments they may not be consciously aware of, these women slip through the cracks of our still-too-inefficient diagnostic procedures. Studies reveal one woman for every nine men is diagnosed with so-called "high-functioning" autism, that is, autism without intellectual disability. If we compare this to the one woman for every four men diagnosed with the more readily identified "low-functioning" autism, we can easily imagine many autistic women are left undiagnosed.
