Spacetimes with Semantics (III) - The Structure of Functional Knowledge Representation and Artificial Reasoning

Using the previously developed concepts of semantic spacetime, I explore the interpretation of knowledge representations, and their structure, as a semantic system, within the framework of promise theory. By assigning interpretations to phenomena, from observers to observed, we may approach a simple description of knowledge-based functional systems, with direct practical utility. The focus is especially on the interpretation of concepts, associative knowledge, and context awareness. The inference seems to be that most if not all of these concepts emerge from purely semantic spacetime properties, which opens the possibility for a more generalized understanding of what constitutes a learning, or even `intelligent' system. Some key principles emerge for effective knowledge representation: 1) separation of spacetime scales, 2) the recurrence of four irreducible types of association, by which intent propagates: aggregation, causation, cooperation, and similarity, 3) the need for discrimination of identities (discrete), which is assisted by distinguishing timeline simultaneity from sequential events, and 4) the ability to learn (memory). It is at least plausible that emergent knowledge abstraction capabilities have their origin in basic spacetime structures. These notes present a unified view of mostly well-known results; they allow us to see information models, knowledge representations, machine learning, and semantic networking (transport and information base) in a common framework. The notion of `smart spaces' thus encompasses artificial systems as well as living systems, across many different scales, e.g. smart cities and organizations.

Facebook's artificial intelligence robots shut down after they start talking to each other in their own language

Facebook has shut down two artificial intelligences that appeared to be chatting to each other in a strange language only they understood. The two chatbots came to create their own changes to English that made it easier for them to work – but which remained mysterious to the humans that supposedly look after them. The bizarre discussions came as Facebook challenged its chatbots to try and negotiate with each other over a trade, attempting to swap hats, balls and books, each of which were given a certain value. But they quickly broke down as the robots appeared to chant at each other in a language that they each understood but which appears mostly incomprehensible to humans. The robots had been instructed to work out how to negotiate between themselves, and improve their bartering as they went along.


Elon Musk's Twitter Account Stirs Up Controversy, This Time About Autonomous Boats

Early Monday morning on the East Coast, or late Sunday evening on the West Coast, Elon Musk was on Twitter and wanted to make sure everyone knew about his autonomous recovery ship named "Of course I still love you." Musk replied to a story written by The Verge about a cargo ship that will operate without a crew by 2020 with a photo of his autonomous ship, designed for recovering his reusable rockets, with the phrase "Umm …" The vessel "Of course I still love you," is an ocean platform that Musk's company SpaceX calls an "autonomous spaceport drone ship." It's used as a landing platform for the first stages of rockets that launch heavy payloads to space and it is, as Musk pointed out, unmanned. The ship measures 300 feet by 100 feet and has wings attached to it that extend the width of it to 170 feet, says SpaceX. Additionally, the ship doesn't anchor while awaiting the rocket's first stage return, it relies on thrusters to keep it in place. While it does carry the 14 story tall rockets that have a landing span of 70 feet, it's not exactly a cargo ship.


Industry 4.0 or Factory 4.0

Industry 4.0 has been under spotlight in past few years, and seems it will only get more attention in years to come. I certainly paid enough attention by switching my job recently to focus on Industry 4.0. Only month 2 in my new role, I do have some thoughts/observations to share. Today's topic is: Are we working on Industry 4.0 or just Factory 4.0? To start with, the translation of Industry 4.0 into Chinese seems more like Factory 4.0, as it is called "Made in China 2025".


Tesla Model 3: Company releases its most affordable car yet but few people can actually buy it

The company has released its Model 3, the long-promised affordable version of its innovative electric vehicle. It costs half as much as the cars Tesla has made before – but won't arrive until at least 2018. There are about 500,000 people already on the waiting list, who've given Elon Musk's company a deposit to reserve their car.

Tesla Model 3 doesn't have a key – and seven other things we learned

Elon Musk revealed Tesla's Model 3 is unlocked by a smartphone and doesn't have a traditional key or fob among a host of other details at the delivery event for the first 30 mass-market electric cars over the weekend. As the Model 3 enters what Musk called "six months of manufacturing hell" as Tesla ramps up production to meet the more than 500,000 pre-orders, one of the most surprising titbits is that there is no traditional key to open and start Tesla's mass-market electric car hope. Instead, would-be buyers of the $35,000-plus five-seat electric car will have to unlock the car with their smartphones over Bluetooth. The car will detect the owner's smartphone – almost all modern smartphones made in the last three years supports Bluetooth – and automatically unlock, ready to start and go. Should the battery on your phone run flat, which is a very real possibility in the days of increased use for everything from music, cameras and now keys, Tesla has a backup in the form of an NFC key card that is apparently thin enough to store in a wallet.
