Canonical Correlation Forests
We introduce canonical correlation forests (CCFs), a new decision tree ensemble method for classification and regression. Individual canonical correlation trees are binary decision trees with hyperplane splits based on local canonical correlation coefficients calculated during training. Unlike axis-aligned alternatives, the decision surfaces of CCFs are not restricted to the coordinate system of the inputs features and therefore more naturally represent data with correlated inputs. CCFs naturally accommodate multiple outputs, provide a similar computational complexity to random forests, and inherit their impressive robustness to the choice of input parameters. As part of the CCF training algorithm, we also introduce projection bootstrapping, a novel alternative to bagging for oblique decision tree ensembles which maintains use of the full dataset in selecting split points, often leading to improvements in predictive accuracy. Our experiments show that, even without parameter tuning, CCFs out-perform axis-aligned random forests and other state-of-the-art tree ensemble methods on both classification and regression problems, delivering both improved predictive accuracy and faster training times. We further show that they outperform all of the 179 classifiers considered in a recent extensive survey.
What people think about AI's potential will come as a surprise
But it's becoming clear that this type of dystopian view of artificial intelligence is out of phase with humans' real-world expectations and hopes for AI. People know this for two reasons: The first has to do with results of a consumer survey we recently fielded; the second has to do with the power of broccoli (I'll get to that in a moment). Consumers, it turns out, may love dystopian fiction about AI's impact (going all the way back to Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein"), but they firmly believe that, in real life, AI will actually make the world a much better place. That's what we found from an independent global survey we commissioned earlier this year, assessing the public's attitude towards intelligent machines. Not only did it reveal that most people were in favour of AI technology, but they see it as bringing huge potential benefit.
The Amazing Ways Google Uses Deep Learning AI
Deep learning is the area of artificial intelligence where the real magic is happening right now. Traditionally computers, while being very fast, have not been very smart – they have no ability to learn from their mistakes and have to be given precise instructions in order to carry out any task. Deep learning involves building artificial neural networks which attempt to mimic the way organic(living) brains sort and process information. The "deep" in deep learning signifies the use of many layers of neural networks all stacked on top of each other. This data processing configuration is known as a deep neural network, and its complexity means it is able to process data to a more thorough and refined degree than other AI technologies which have come before it.

Tens of millions of chronically ill people around the world rely on repeat prescriptions, but getting the drugs they need can be a time-consuming and frustrating process. Now apps, automation and home delivery services are making their lives easier. When Melissa Fehr came home from hospital after undergoing a major bone marrow procedure, she says she was carrying "two enormous bags of medication". There were drugs to guard against infection, and other drugs to combat the side effects of other drugs, she says. A bout of shingles was "horrible ... it was just constant pain, so I was prescribed five or six different pain killers", she says.

The longest amount of time that a spacecraft has survived on the surface of Venus is 127 minutes. On March 1, 1982, the USSR's Venera 13 probe parachuted to a gentle landing and managed to keep operating for just over two hours by hiding all of its computers inside of a hermetically sealed titanium pressure vessel that was pre-cooled in orbit. The surface temperature on Venus averages 464 C (867 F), which is hotter than the surface of Mercury (the closest planet to the sun), and hot enough that conventional electronics simply will not work. It's not just the temperature that makes Venus a particularly nasty place for computers--the pressure at the surface is around 90 atmospheres, equivalent to the pressure 3,000 feet down in Earth's ocean. And while you can be relieved that the sulfuric acid rain that you'll find in Venus' upper atmosphere doesn't reach the surface, it's also so dark down there (equivalent to a heavily overcast day here on Earth) that solar power is horrendously inefficient.
Shooter video games really do rot your brain
Playing violent'shooter' video games can damage the brain and may even increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease, brain scans suggest. Researchers at the University of Montreal got around 100 people to play a range of popular'shooter' games such as Call Of Duty, Killzone and Borderlands 2 for a total of 90 hours. They also gave them copes of non-violent games from the Super Mario series. By the end of the study, they found that people who habitually played action games had fewer neurons in their hippocampus, a key memory center in the brain. However, those who played non-violent games ended the study with more essential gray matter in their brains.
Moderate drinking is good for creativity
If you are looking for a flash of inspiration, it might be at the bottom of a pint of beer. A study has found a drink can help us think more creatively, by freeing up the brain to think in a different way. It does not require industrial strength quantities, such as those enjoyed by the great poet Dylan Thomas or novelist Marguerite Duras. But the equivalent of a pint of beer or a small glass of wine was found by Austrian scientists to help people unleash their creative side. The researchers gave 70 people a drink of either beer or non-alcohol beer, which they were unable to distinguish between.
Life-saving drones used rescue swimmers off French coast
Could this be the'Baywatch' of the future? A cutting-edge lifesaving initiative - the rescue drone - is taking flight again this summer off France's popular Atlantic beaches. Following a successful launch in 2016, three airborne life-saver drones are being operated in the southwestern Nouvelle-Aquitaine region until September to help swimmers struggling in choppy water.
