AI cameras detect when hospital staff don't wash hands
When patients go to the hospital to get treated for an illness, sometimes they end up far more sick than they were when they entered. In an effort to improve hospital hygiene standards and reduce the incidence of these infections, researchers have developed an AI camera-tracking system that automatically identifies when staffers and patients use hand sanitizer dispensers. New Study: Retailers Look to Bridge the Relationship Gap with AI
Over 100 marketing leaders from the most prominent retail brands in the world weighed in on consumer engagement strategies in the 2017 study, "Building Lasting Consumer Relationships in Retail," released by Persado and WBR Digital. The survey was conducted via in-depth interviews with CMOs and other marketing leadership at US- and UK-based major retailers including Best Buy, Marks and Spencer, Williams-Sonoma, Urban Outfitters, and Nordstrom, amongst many others. The survey reveals that despite retailers' efforts to provide relevant content and experiences, they continue to fall short on the personalization front. How these companies are personalizing might be standing in the way of better communication. According to the study, marketers are overly relying on demographic and geographic data, while significantly underutilizing behavioral data, lifecycle stages, and psychographic indicators like emotional triggers.

It plans to "bring our London Googlers together" with a 25-metre swimming pool, massage rooms, a basketball court, nap pods and a 200-metre "trim trail", which loops around a rooftop meadow, to encourage "the Google culture of walking meetings", as the Guardian's architecture and design critic, Olly Wainwright, put it. This is where I begin to feel queasy. Google has its own "culture", which its 7,000 London employees will presumably have to embrace cheerily while they work, jog, snooze, eat, play and eventually live on this monster "campus".

Women were the big winners at the 2017 Hugo Awards
The Hugo Awards, widely considered the most prestigious science fiction and fantasy prizes, were announced Friday, with female authors dominating and N.K. Jemisin winning the award for novel for the second year in a row. Jemisin, who became the first black author to win the Hugo's novel award last year (for "The Fifth Season"), won again with the book's sequel, "The Obelisk Gate." The third and final book in Jemisin's trilogy, "The Stone Sky," will be released Tuesday. The awards were announced at a ceremony at Worldcon 75, a science fiction festival held this year in Helsinki, Finland. Female authors also took home the awards for novella ("Every Heart a Doorway" by Seanan McGuire), novelette ("The Tomato Thief" by Ursula Vernon) and short story ("Seasons of Glass and Iron" by Amal El-Mohtar).

As dean of Swinburne University's Law School, he's working to have most wardens replaced by a system of advanced artificial intelligence connected to a network of high-tech sensors. Called the Technological Incarceration Project, the idea is to make not so much an internet of things as an internet of incarceration. Professor Hunter's team is researching an advanced form of home detention, using artificial intelligence, machine-learning algorithms and lightweight electronic sensors to monitor convicted offenders on a 24-hour basis.

Ok, it might not sound as glamorous as the Summer of Love or Bryan Adams' Summer of '69, but it's just as seminal - if not more so.
