This week, customers in Canada and the U.S. can use Google Home to make phone calls, Microsoft's been testing autonomous gliders, and machine learning could help unearth new species of plant life from among centuries of unclassified data. Google has got its hands on AIMatter โ€“ a startup that has created a neural network AI platform to see and process images, which it then uses to run programs. The Belarus company has also built an app for photo and video editing, so that users can apply masks, backgrounds, colour-swaps and other creative wizardry to their photos. Early information about the deal suggests that most of AIMatter's employees will move over to Google, though it's not clear whether that will mean they have to relocate.


Fiat teams up with BMW in race to build 'robotaxis'

Fiat Chrysler will join an alliance led by BMW to develop self-driving cars, intensifying a race by carmakers and technology companies to develop'robotaxis' which can be called up via smartphone and paid for by the minute. The market for such self-driving cabs could be worth $2 trillion by 2030, according to consultants McKinsey, as younger customers abandon car ownership in favour of a pay-per-use mobility service. Fiat Chrysler (FCA) said it plans to put autonomous car technology into production by 2021, matching a timeframe shared by rival companies who are also developing self-driving cars. Fiat Chrysler will join an alliance led by BMW to develop self-driving cars, intensifying a race by carmakers and technology companies to develop'robotaxis' which can be called up via smartphone and paid for by the minute BMW and its partners Intel and Mobileye said FCA would bring engineering and other expertise to the deal, paving the way to creating an industry-wide autonomous car platform which other carmakers could adopt. Automakers are seeking alliances to share the high costs of developing autonomous cars, which according to consulting firm Frost & Sullivan will make up about 10 to 15 percent of vehicles in Europe by 2030.


Google acquires AIMatter, maker of the Fabby computer vision app

The search and Android giant has acquired AIMatter, a startup founded in Belarus that has built both a neural network-based AI platform and SDK to detect and process images quickly on mobile devices, and a photo and video editing app that has served as a proof-of-concept of the tech called Fabby. We'd had wind of the deal going down as far back as May, although it only officially closed today. Fabby and Google have confirmed the deal to us and there should be a statement posted on AIMatter's site about the news soon (update: it's up). A Google spokesperson provided TC with a short statement: "We are excited to welcome the AIMatter team to Google." Terms of the sale are not being disclosed, but we understand that Fabby -- which has had over 2 million downloads -- will continue to run, and from what we understand most of AIMatter's employees will come over to Google.

A report claims that producers are working on a programme in which a robot will use artificial intelligence to solve celebrity's family problems and relationship issues. Self-healing polymers make for tougher soft robots

Robotic teams around the world are working on soft robots, because some situations call for a touch gentler than what a rigid machine can give. They can squish into tight locations for search-and-rescue missions, for instance, and pick up fragile objects without breaking or damaging them. Unfortunately, they're also more prone to damage, especially if they're bound to come across sharp edges in their environments. To solve that problem, a team of researchers from Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium have developed a way to create soft machines that can heal themselves -- all you have to do is add heat. The researchers proved that their method works by making a gripper, a robotic hand and an artificial muscle with self-healing properties.

It is not too much to say that finance is undergoing a paradigm shift today, driven by smartphones, financial technology startups, and trends such as blockchain and artificial intelligence. "Most of the change in the industry was quite incremental and what I regard as linear โ€“ the introduction of ATMs, the introduction of credit cards, those kinds of things," says Antony Jenkins, former chief executive of Barclays. "When you look at what's happening now with mobile banking, it's a true transformation. The power in people's pockets enables them to change things in really quite a radical way."

When I'm bumper-to-bumper in a sea of exhaust fumes and distracted drivers, it seems like autonomous driving can't get here fast enough. Nor can the potential rewards that come along with fully autonomous vehicles, like far fewer accidents and mobility for people who struggle to get around on their own. To do my part, I'm focusing on how building the best autonomous brain for a car will get us there faster. Every day, we're getting closer to the technology needed to power self-driving cars. But in-vehicle compute needs are complex, and autonomous driving algorithms are changing rapidly.
