MILES O'BRIEN: We're going to get a better picture tomorrow of how strong job creation is when the monthly employment report comes out. But whatever that snapshot looks like, there are concerns about the rise of robotics and automation, and what that means for the future of the work force. You might expect cars at the world's largest auto show, hosted in Frankfurt, Germany, to reflect European tastes for smaller, more economical cars. And, indeed, previewing what's coming to the show in September, confirms those proclivities: Car makers are taking the miniaturization idea global. And in some cases, giving it a retro twist that will please the older, more-moneyed city dwellers who are all too happy to open their wallets to buy a little bit of nostalgia. Volkswagen finally announced it's definitely making a much-teased electric microbus, a 21st century resurrection of the beloved van from the 1960s, for sale in 2022. Based on the same platform as the I.D. electric car, it should pack eight passengers and their luggage into a vehicle the size of a small SUV and bedecked in a 60s-look packaging.


Software product firm SunTec is ready for AI

SunTec describes itself as one of the few future-ready software product companies with its technology feet firmly rooted in the Indian IT landscape, but still wary of the hypothesis of'singularity.' The 27-year-old Kerala-based firm has offices in Singapore, Dubai, the UK, Germany and the US. 'Singularity' threat The unlisted firm has a presence in financial services, digital communication services, travel, logistics and retail, and counts 95 per cent of clients from a revenue perspective to be global. This number will be slightly higher from the perspective of its recent entry into the GST scheme of things locally, says K Nanda Kumar, founder and CEO. Explaining his concerns about'singularity', he said this is a stage where artificial intelligence would overtake human intelligence.


The nine weirdest new indie games at Gamescom

Last week's vast Gamescom expo in Cologne, saw all the biggest video games of the coming year presented to 400,000 visitors, over five chaotic days. But it wasn't all about the blockbuster titles set to dominate the charts this Christmas. The event also gave dozens of small independent studios the chance to show off their more offbeat and idiosyncratic projects. Signal Recovery from Unlabeled Samples

In this paper, we study the recovery of a signal from a set of noisy linear projections (measurements), when such projections are unlabeled, that is, the correspondence between the measurements and the set of projection vectors (i.e., the rows of the measurement matrix) is not known a priori. We consider a special case of unlabeled sensing referred to as Unlabeled Ordered Sampling (UOS) where the ordering of the measurements is preserved. We identify a natural duality between this problem and classical Compressed Sensing (CS), where we show that the unknown support (location of nonzero elements) of a sparse signal in CS corresponds to the unknown indices of the measurements in UOS. While in CS it is possible to recover a sparse signal from an under-determined set of linear equations (less equations than the signal dimension), successful recovery in UOS requires taking more samples than the dimension of the signal. Motivated by this duality, we develop a Restricted Isometry Property (RIP) similar to that in CS. We also design a low-complexity Alternating Minimization algorithm that achieves a stable signal recovery under the established RIP. We analyze our proposed algorithm for different signal dimensions and number of measurements theoretically and investigate its performance empirically via simulations. The results are reminiscent of phase-transition similar to that occurring in CS.


Experts warn that AI-enhanced cyberattacks are an imminent threat

There are many benefits that can come with the adoption and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI), but experts believe such widespread acceptance will lead to more effective and more dangerous cyberattacks. And that they'll happen soon. At this year's Black Hat cybersecurity conference, 100 attendees were polled about various aspects of artificial intelligence, and 62 percent said they firmly believe AI will be used by hackers within the next twelve months. Despite the idea that AI may be the best defense against such attacks, its increasing availability will likely lead to more advanced hacking techniques. Hackers have already hacked into huge institutions and disrupted the lives of many.


AI robots are sexist and racist, experts warn

He said the deep learning algorithms which drive AI software are "not transparent", making it difficult to to redress the problem. Currently approximately 9 per cent of the engineering workforce in the UK is female, with women making up only 20 per cent of those taking A Level physics. "We have a problem," Professor Sharkey told Today. "We need many more women coming into this field to solve it." His warning came as it was revealed a prototype programme developed to short-list candidates for a UK medical school had negatively selected against women and black and other ethnic minority candidates.

This question of who a vehicle should kill when placed in a situation where every outcome would end in death is often called the "Trolley problem." It's an ethical debate that's lasted more than 60 years: Ethicists riddle each other with questions of whether it's excusable to kill two elderly people to save one child, or save a pregnant woman while killing a man and a child, and on and on. Building health AIs should be UK ambition, says strategy review

A wide-ranging, UK government-commissioned industrial strategy review of the life sciences sector, conducted by Oxford University's Sir John Bell, has underlined the value locked up in publicly funded data held by the country's National Health Service -- and called for a new regulatory framework to be established in order to "capture for the UK the value in algorithms generated using NHS data". The NHS is a free-at-the-point of use national health service covering some 65 million users -- which gives you an idea of the unique depth and granularity of the patient data it holds. And how much potential value could therefore be created for the nation by utilizing patient data-sets to develop machine learning algorithms for medical diagnosis and tracking. "AI is likely to be used widely in healthcare and it should be the ambition for the UK to develop and test integrated AI systems that provide real-time data better than human monitoring and prediction of a wide range of patient outcomes in conditions such as mental health, cancer and inflammatory disease," writes Bell in the report. His recommendation for the government and the NHS to be pro-active about creating and capturing AI-enabled value off of valuable, taxpayer-funded health data-sets comes hard on the heels of the conclusion of a lengthy investigation by the UK's data protection watchdog, the ICO, into a controversial 2015 data-sharing arrangement between Google-DeepMind and a London-based NHS Trust, the Royal Free Hospitals Trust, to co-develop a clinical task management app.
