Complexity Classification in Infinite-Domain Constraint Satisfaction

A constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) is a computational problem where the input consists of a finite set of variables and a finite set of constraints, and where the task is to decide whether there exists a satisfying assignment of values to the variables. Depending on the type of constraints that we allow in the input, a CSP might be tractable, or computationally hard. In recent years, general criteria have been discovered that imply that a CSP is polynomial-time tractable, or that it is NP-hard. Finite-domain CSPs have become a major common research focus of graph theory, artificial intelligence, and finite model theory. It turned out that the key questions for complexity classification of CSPs are closely linked to central questions in universal algebra. This thesis studies CSPs where the variables can take values from an infinite domain. This generalization enhances dramatically the range of computational problems that can be modeled as a CSP. Many problems from areas that have so far seen no interaction with constraint satisfaction theory can be formulated using infinite domains, e.g. problems from temporal and spatial reasoning, phylogenetic reconstruction, and operations research. It turns out that the universal-algebraic approach can also be applied to study large classes of infinite-domain CSPs, yielding elegant complexity classification results. A new tool in this thesis that becomes relevant particularly for infinite domains is Ramsey theory. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach with two complete complexity classification results: one on CSPs in temporal reasoning, the other on a generalization of Schaefer's theorem for propositional logic to logic over graphs. We also study the limits of complexity classification, and present classes of computational problems provably do not exhibit a complexity dichotomy into hard and easy problems.

Metallica's European WorldWired tour, which opened to an ecstatic crowd of 15,000 in Copenhagen's sold-out Royal Arena this Saturday, features a swarm of micro drones flying above the band. Shortly after the band breaks into their hit single "Moth Into Flame", dozens of micro drones start emerging from the stage, forming a large rotating circle above the stage. As the music builds, more and more drones emerge and join the formation, creating increasingly complex patterns, culminating in a choreography of three interlocking rings that rotate in position. This show's debut marks the world's first autonomous drone swarm performance in a major touring act. Unlike previous drone shows, this performance features indoor drones, flying above performers and right next to throngs of concert viewers in a live event setting.

Amazon Alexa on The Dash, Intelligent Personal Assistant meets Wireless Hearables

Known for driving the hearables tech space into a new phase, startup Bragi has announced their latest venture with online shopping giant Amazon. With the objective to make the Dash series (The Dash, The Dash Pro) Alexa-compatible, this collaboration will mark the first for intelligent personal assistant Alexa. Designed for convenience, the Amazon Alexa is capable of voice interaction, music playback, making to-do lists, setting alarms, streaming podcasts, playing audiobooks, and providing weather, traffic, and other real time information, such as news. Founded in 2013, Munich-based Bragi have cornered the hearable market with their innovative technology. They gained popularity during its Kickstarter campaign, where 15,998 backers contributed over $3.3 million (USD).


GDPR Readiness: Security Pros Counting on AI, Machine Learning for Data Protection

A recent Imperva survey of 310 IT security professionals found that 55 percent of respondents are counting on artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning solutions to bear some of their data protection workload over the next three to five years, and 27 percent said they're expecting the same within the next year or two. The survey also found that 22 percent of respondents haven't yet hired a Data Protection Officer (DPO), a key requirement of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for any organization processing personal data on a large scale. Of those that haven't hired a DPO, 52 percent aren't planning to hire one until the second half of 2018 or later. The GDPR takes effect on May 25, 2018. When asked whether their company is preparing for GDPR, 16 percent said no, and 5 percent didn't know.

We're still diving deep into Europe's biggest tech show: the weekend included pianos that can talk with Alexa, and testing out both LG and Nokia's newest phones' photography -- including selfies. LG's new V30, unveiled at IFA 2017, is the first smartphone to offer a glass lens with a f/1.6 aperture, and has some rather cool video-recording tools that should excite aspiring Spielbergs. To see if it really lives up to the sales promises, Reviews Editor Cherlynn Low took the V30 on a trigger-happy tour of Berlin's Tier Garden, and found it a versatile, powerful camera. In fact, its filmmaking features are truly standout. It doesn't do justice to the label's imaging heritage.

The basic need for information, of all kinds, as Mark Twain observed (in Pudd'nhead Wilson, 1897): "The old saw says, 'Let a sleeping dog lie.' Right. Still, when there is much at stake, it is better to get a newspaper to do it." Today, the need for "serious" and "sensational" information is satisfied less and less by newspapers alone. The days of loyalty to a particular news organization on a particular piece of technology in a particular form are gone.
