Britain's military will commit to ensuring that drones and other remote weaponry are always under human control, as part of a new doctrine designed to calm concerns about the development of killer robots. The move by the Ministry of Defence comes after more than 100 leading robotics experts wrote to the United Nations urging the organisation to step in to halt the development of artificial intelligence in weaponry. The announcement is also timed in response to demonstrations at this week's biennial Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) fair, one of the world's biggest arms exhibitions. More than 34,000 visitors are expected to attend the event at the ExCeL centre in east London's docklands. The new doctrine will make clear that the UK opposes the development of autonomous weapons systems that could operate without trained controllers and traditional chains of command.

A record number of visitors – 30,000 – turned out for the biannual science days hosted by the University of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zurich. Over the course of three days, some 300 researchers welcomed visitors at 60 stands, 40 lectures, and 14 workshops covering topics like health, robotics and climate science as well as the linguistic and cultural sciences. People could watch and participate in live experiments and ask questions of the scientists on hand. The science cafés – where experts gave presentations and then discussed topics like artificial intelligence, financial investments, data journalism and gender in medicine – were filled to capacity. Apple's stock market value is heading towards a new milestone and its latest product launch on 12 September could push the tech giant closer to becoming the first ever $1tn (£760bn) company. At the end of last week, the company's market capitalisation hovered around $830bn, continuing a 10-year run that has generally headed upwards since a low of $69bn in January 2009, during the financial crisis. Tuesday's event, with the iPhone 8 the star attraction, will strive to meet investors' – and customers' – vaulting expectations. But what will Apple tempt users with to justify Wall Street's faith in its future profits? An Apple spokesman declined to discuss what will be revealed at the event in the company's $5bn, spaceship-shaped Cupertino headquarters.

When we talk to people, we choose how much personal information to disclose about ourselves. How much we reveal, both in terms of breadth and depth, depends on many factors. In a therapeutic context, it is considered desirable to self-disclose, yet people sometimes hold back negative personal experiences, due to fear of being judged or revealing their weaknesses. Researchers Takahisa Uchida and colleagues from Osaka University hypothesized that people may find it easier to disclose their negative feelings to a robot due to its lower social position. The findings of their preliminary research were presented at the 2017 Robot and Human Interactive Communication symposium in Lisbon in August.

A large volume of collated information alone does not guarantee deeper insights. To gain these and use raw data economically, complex analytical methods and intelligent processing are required. Munich Re employs data analytics in many areas and has developed applications from which insurers and insured persons benefit equally. "Examples of artificial intelligence (AI) can be found in various areas of the insurance industry today – for example in underwriting and claims", says Wolfgang Hauner, Chief Data Officer at Munich Re. "AI can support consultants in their work, helping with fact-checking and recommending courses of action, for instance." By contrast, processes in underwriting are becoming smarter: "All the available data and sources are called upon here, improving processes and the customer experience."
