The ongoing artificial-intelligence revolution will change almost every line of work, creating enormous social and economic opportunities -- and challenges. Some believe that intelligent computers will push humans out of the job market and create a new'useless class'; others maintain that automation will generate a wide range of new human jobs and greater prosperity for all. Almost everybody agrees that we should take action to prevent the worst-case scenarios. The automation revolution is emerging from the confluence of two scientific tidal waves. Computer scientists are developing artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms that can learn, analyse massive amounts of data and recognize patterns with superhuman efficiency.

PEOPLE often marry people who are just like them – similar in terms of social background, world view and race. Online dating may be changing that, however, breaking us out of our existing social circles. Economists Josué Ortega at the University of Essex, UK, and Philipp Hergovich at the University of Vienna, Austria, suggest it could even lead to more integrated societies. Before the first dating websites appeared in the 1990s, most people would meet dates through existing networks of friends or colleagues. But the rise of dating sites like Match.com and apps like Tinder has made online dating the norm for many.


UK govt: AI should be overseen, not regulated - TimesTech Now

The UK government has said that artificial intelligence should not be regulated, but overseen. According to a report, which was commissioned in February, an AI council should "operate as a strategic oversight group", and guide discussions around diversity, transparency, accountability and diversity in the sector. Additionally, the report made 18 key recommendations, which included proposals to improve access to data in a bid to spur the development of AI systems in the UK. The report also touched on ways in which government, industry and academia could group together to improve the supply of skills, with proposals including the creation of 200 AI-dedicated PhD places at leading universities. Maximising AI research in the UK was also on the agenda, with the report highlighting the need for universities to use "clear, accessible and where possible common policies and practices for licensing IP and forming spin-out companies". Culture secretary Karen Bradley said: "I want the UK to lead the way in artificial intelligence.

Startup Instana, which has quietly been developing application performance management (APM) tools for containers and microservices, is officially releasing its first commercial offering this week, adding artificial intelligence and automation into the DevOps process. The company is detailing the product -- also called Instana -- at Dockercon Europe on Tuesday. The goal is to speed-up the development, testing, deployment and maintenance of new applications, especially those applications deployed in containers or through microservices, as enterprises move toward their goal of digital transformation. "The digitization or digital transformation trend that is going on is not about being big, it's simply about being fast," Pete Abrams, the co-founder and COO of Instana, told Enterprise Cloud News before the October 17 launch. "The people that can code-up, deploy and operate new business services the fastest are showing themselves to be the winner, and that is a massive competitive advantage."


Ports Have Different Automation Needs

Pedro Galveia, Yard and Ship Planner and Port Consultant at Yilport Sotagus in Lisbon explained roughly how automation will break down among the differently sized terminals in a new video. Observations can be made regarding three main areas of terminal automation: the Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, the stacking area and the gates. Galveia explains in the video: "For bigger terminals above 4-5 million moves per year, global terminal operators behind them will put pressure to automate the STS cranes. "Terminals with a half-million moves will search for process automation and clean flows in their STS cranes. Researchers use AI to banish choppy streaming videos

Nobody likes it when their binge watching is disrupted by a buffering video. While streaming sites like Netflix have offered workarounds for connectivity problems (including offline viewing and quality controls), researchers are tackling the issue head on. In August, a team from MIT CSAIL unveiled its solution: A neural network that can pick the ideal algorithms to ensure a smooth stream at the best possible quality. But, they're not alone in their quest to banish video stutters. The folks at France's EPFL university are also tapping into machine learning as part of their own method. The researchers claim their program can boost the user experience by 37 percent, while also reducing power loads by almost 20 percent.


Automation could wipe out third of jobs by 2030's

The rise of robots could lead to'unprecedented' change and wipe out over a third of jobs in some areas by the 2030's a new report warns. A'heat map' of Britain shows the areas most at risk of automation, with workers in the ex industrial heartlands of the North and Midlands most likely to lose their jobs. The upheaval tossed up by'supercharged' technological change over the next 15 years could make the industrial revolution pale in comparison, the study says. The report, The impact of AI in UK constituencies, by think-tank Future Advocacy, slams the government for failing to prepare for the rapid change looming. Researchers said the results are'startling' and told ministers to urgently look at new education and training to help the country adapt to the challenge. It shows that the UK's former industrial heartlands of the Midlands and the north are most at risk from the march of the machines Meanwhile, a YouGov poll carried out for the report found that just seven per cent of Brits are worried about losing their jobs to automation.

London: Artificially intelligent (AI) nano-machines will be injected into humans in 20 years to be used to repair and enhance muscles, cells and bones, as well as enable us to control our environment with thought and gestures, says an IT specialist at IBM. "We may see nano-machines being injected into our bodies," John McNamara, senior inventor and IT specialist at IBM's Hursley Innovation Centre in Hampshire, UK, was quoted as saying to the Telegraph.co.uk. "These will provide huge medical benefits, such as being able to repair damage to cells, muscles and bones -- perhaps even augment them," McNamara added. McNamara said that within two decades, technology may have advanced to such a level that humans and machines are effectively "melded" together, allowing for huge leaps forward in human consciousness and cognition, raising the economic, ethical and social implications of AI. "Beyond this, utilising technology which is already being explored today, we see the creation of technology that can meld the biological with the technological and so be able to enhance human cognitive capability directly, as well as being able to utilise vast quantities of computing power to augment our own thought processes. "Using this technology, embedded in ourselves and in our surroundings, we will begin to be able to control our environment with thought and gestures alone," McNamara noted. However, in a report submitted to the House of Lords Artificial Intelligence Committee, McNamara warned that the rise of AI could bring "huge disruption" in the retail and service sectors which could spike widespread unemployment.
