Analytics leader SAS is helping customers gain more value from data with SAS Viya products, extending the value from the SAS Platform. Every year our HCI research group defines a number of Master thesis topics for Computer Science and Engineering students. Our topics include data visualisation, recommender systems, augmented reality, learning analytics, and e-health. As my expertise is data visualisation, and video games have always held a special place in my heart, it only made sense to merge the two. That's why this year we have two Master students working on "Designing live data visualisations for the new spectator sport: video games". The general idea is to use live (interactive) visualisations during a game to help a specific audience get a better understanding of and new insights in what is going on.
Here's how citizen scientists assisted with the disaster response in the Caribbean
The post-disaster environment poses immense challenges for crisis response teams tasked with assessing the extent of the damage as quickly as possible, often over thousands of square miles. These teams need a sound and reliable understanding of the situation on the ground, to quickly and safely provide the right help to the people affected. Citizen scientists from around the world can play a key role in delivering this information to emergency responders on the ground. In the wake of hurricanes Irma and Maria, which swept across the Caribbean during September 2017, an ongoing collaboration between the Zooniverse (an online citizen science platform), the University of Oxford, and NGO Rescue Global, has enlisted thousands of volunteers worldwide to analyse satellite-based information. The end result is a series of maps that highlight affected areas, providing a robust source of information which helps Rescue Global and the disaster relief community to generate more detailed mapping, and conduct needs assessments, aid deliveries and evacuations on the ground. When Rescue Global began their Hurricane Irma response operation in early September, the Planetary Response Network, a collaboration between the Zooniverse and Oxford University, was activated quickly and began sourcing satellite images of the disaster-affected areas from data providers Planet, Digital Globe, NASA and ESA.

It has been estimated that AI could add $837 billion to the UK economy by 2035. Scientists are therefore looking into automating the process of machine learning and have AI teach AI. (MIT Technology Review) 3. Google's AI is better at creating AI than its developers Creating algorithms is difficult, but has been one of the last areas of superiority over the machines. Google's AutoML system just created a series of machine-learning codes with higher rates of efficiency than those made by the researchers.
Event review: What can big data do for chemistry?
The academic community are producing research papers at an exponential rate, so much so that good research and innovation can easily become lost in the sheer volume of information produced. How scientists and industry can shift through the noise was the basis for SCI's Fine Chemicals group'What can big data do for chemistry?' event, held on 11 October 2017. Delegates heard from experts on the importance of computational research in drug discovery and development, as well as the chemical sciences. Highlights included talks from Prof Gisbert Schneider, ETH Zurich, on his work into big'dada' in medicinal chemistry and the need for a balance between'the mind and the machine', as well as an update from Dr Aileen Day on the data science project at the Royal Society of Chemistry, which is working towards building a database of their work that can help disseminate knowledge to researchers. Artificial intelligence (AI) was a common theme at the event, with many of the speakers from biotechnology companies.
This tool reveals everything that Facebook's AI knows about you Access AI
Browser extension Data Selfie tracks you while you are on Facebook. The open-source tool helps you learn how machine learning algorithms track your Facebook activity and gain insights into your habits and about your personality. The tool tracks your activity, what topics you look at, what you click on and what you type. It then applies natural language processing and machine learning algorithms from IBM Watson and the University of Cambridge to crunch it and gain insights. These insights are displayed on a dashboard that shows your aggregated Facebook activity in a timeline. As well as showing what posts you've spent the most time on, Data Selfie uses predictive analytics to guess things such as your political affiliations as well as shopping and nutrition preferences.

A Rosetta Stone for Earthquakes
Istanbul, a city of 14 million people and a crossroads of cultural exchange dating back millennia, may also be where Turkey's next major earthquake strikes. Cities along the North Anatolian Fault, which stretches from eastern Turkey to the Aegean Sea, have experienced an advancing series of strong quakes during the past 80 years, beginning in 1939 when a devastating 7.8-magnitude rupture leveled the city of Erzincan and killed 33,000 people. Most recently, in 1999, 7.4-magnitude quake near the city of İzmit left 17,000 dead and half a million homeless. A few months later, another shock hit Düzce, 60 miles away. Brendan Meade, an applied computational scientist and associate professor of earth and planetary sciences, recently built a computer model of conditions in the North Anatolian Fault.
