WAVTEQ - Data Technology
WAVTEQ, the economic development business attraction consulting group, has secured support from InterTradeIreland(ITI) to build an Artificial Intelligence (AI) team. The new AI division will commence R&D activity into a fully automated corporate intelligence research platform. ITI funding will provide additional employment in the fields of artificial intelligence and data analytics, with new appointments to WAVTEQ's dedicated software engineering team, based in Cork, Ireland, expected within the next two months. In February 2018, this expanded team will move into a new state of the art facility at Fota Business Park, Cork. The research and development undertaken by WAVTEQ under InterTradeIreland's Fusion Program will be in collaboration with Queen's University Belfast and will be jointly led by Robert Pasley, Chief Technology Officer at WAVTEQ and Dr Salissou Moutari from the School of Mathematics and Physics at Queen's.
Patient Insights in the Age of AI
"One of the greatest cost drivers in healthcare is still hiding in plain sight. So began an article in Forbes last month by Hayden Bosworth, professor of medicine, psychiatry, and nursing at Duke University Medical Center, and Prescriptions for a Healthy America's Sloane Salzburg. The authors called for the issue to be a made "a national priority," and reported on the recommendations by a group of experts representing patients, physicians, pharmacies, and pharma companies on how to fix the problem. Bosworth and Sloane identified the need for improved information sharing between the clinical and pharmacy setting, better integration of healthcare systems, the leveraging of new and better technologies, and better incentives for healthcare providers, plans and drug manufacturers to improve patient adherence in federal healthcare programs. It is revealing that this call for action positions new and better technology as only part of the solution. In the field of digital health and patient adherence, one could be forgiven for thinking that the answers to the nonadherence problem lie in the advancing connectivity protocols and mobile solutions that incorporate medication reminders and encouragement, or enable the timing of medication access to be controlled. In the last few years, as Dr. Bill Byrom, senior director, product innovation, for the contract research organization ICON, points out, we have seen the emergence of: Such innovations continue apace, and their contribution to tackling nonadherence is vital. However, Bosworth reminds us that, while digital health is "definitely here, it's just part of the toolbox." He told Pharm Exec: "If people think of it as panacea that is going to solve everything, they will be consistently disappointed." Clare Moloney, Atlantis Healthcare's clinical strategy director, Europe, further explains: "There is still the thinking that if you put something in an app or on someone's phone, or if you put a device in someone's home, that it is going to be a magic fix.

Velocity Health puts ยฃ68k up for grabs to machine learning, AI start-ups
Artificial intelligence (AI) start-ups will be given the opportunity to receive up to ยฃ68,000 in funding as part of the 2018 Velocity Health programme. Velocity Health is an accelerator programme spear-headed by global Global healthcare firm Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) and Wayra UK, the accelerator platform owned by Telefรณnica. It was set up in 2015 and targets start-ups working to meet the challenges facing the NHS. This year, MSD and Wayra UK are seeking firms using machine learning and AI to support disease and illness prevention. Two companies will be offered a maximum of ยฃ68,000 each in funding and "acceleration services".

It is often a laborious, travel-intensive job. But machine learning and predictive analytics are starting to transform how an investor puts a portfolio together. "My job used to be about getting on a plane once a week and going to a different European city to try to find people who were doing interesting things," says Roberto Bonanzinga, co-founder of InReach Ventures and previously a partner at Balderton Capital, a UK-based VC firm which invests primarily in early-stage European technology companies.
Will artificial intelligence become conscious?
Another viewpoint on consciousness comes from quantum theory, which is the deepest theory of physics. According to the orthodox Copenhagen Interpretation, consciousness and the physical world are complementary aspects of the same reality. When a person observes, or experiments on, some aspect of the physical world, that person's conscious interaction causes discernible change. Since it takes consciousness as a given and no attempt is made to derive it from physics, the Copenhagen Interpretation may be called the "big-C" view of consciousness, where it is a thing that exists by itself โ although it requires brains to become real. Rolls-Royce creates cross-business data unit to drive efficiency
LONDON (Reuters) - Rolls-Royce has created a data unit, named R2 Data Labs, that uses analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve efficiency across its civil and defense aerospace, marine, nuclear and power systems businesses. Chief digital officer Neil Crockett said the model would deliver a "step change" in the capability of the British company's data services and would enable it to work more closely with its customers. "R2 Data Labs will tap into expertise from across a wide data and analytics supply chain, building a diverse community of data innovators: including OEM partners, niche start-ups, academics, and a broad range of other trusted third-parties," he said on Tuesday. Last month Rolls-Royce said it would work with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on building a new digital platform that will help it develop new products quicker - one of the main targets in Chief Executive Warren East's turnaround plan.

Robots can set us free and reverse decline, says Labour's Tom Watson
Labour's Tom Watson will call on society to "embrace an android" as he argues that the rise of automation in the workplace need not cause mass unemployment and should instead be welcomed. The party's deputy leader will make the comments at the launch of the final report of the Future of Work Commission, which has concluded that people should not fear the "march of the robots". Instead, it claims that if government investment is sensibly targeted, the technological revolution has the potential to reverse the UK's economic decline and create as many jobs as it destroys. Watson, who convened and co-chaired the commission, is expected to say: "Much has been written about the impact of technological change and the dystopian future we could all face as a result of the rise of the robots. "It can sometimes feel like we are preparing for a world in which artificial intelligence, algorithms and automation, rather than human endeavour and hard work, will shape every aspect of our society and our economy.
