How the Government's plan for autonomous vehicles could be driving us towards a dystopian future
The British Government is spending unprecedented amounts of money on encouraging the development of cars that drive themselves. But the UK is little prepared for the disruptive and potentially devastating changes that such cars could bring to our streets, experts have warned. While huge amounts of work is being done in the UK and elsewhere on such technology, towns and cities are continuing to work largely as they have with private, driven vehicles โ by both governments and private car and tech companies โ little is being done to change the cities they will drive around. That could become a problem if autonomous vehicles truly take over, as the government has both predicted and supported. That's because little is being done by either the Government or other bodies to ensure that the country is ready to embrace the challenges brought by such technology.

Just like the authors, I used a word embedding model trained on Google News.

New AI method keeps data private University of Helsinki
Modern AI is based on machine learning which creates models by learning from data. Data used in many applications such as health and human behaviour is private and needs protection. New privacy-aware machine learning methods have been developed recently based on the concept of differential privacy. They guarantee that the published model or result can reveal only limited information on each data subject. "Previously you needed one party with unrestricted access to all the data. Our new method enables learning accurate models for example using data on user devices without the need to reveal private information to any outsider", Assistant Professor Antti Honkela of the University of Helsinki says.
KLM Using Artificial Intelligence Within Its Social Media Service - insideBIGDATA
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is taking the next step in using artificial intelligence (AI) within its social media service. KLM worked with AI frontrunner, DigitalGenius, to add automated answers to general repetitive questions from customers without the intervention of a human service agent. This gives KLM agents more time to focus on questions in conversations with customers that require a human approach. KLM is the first airline to offer a combination of human agents and artificial intelligence in a single conversation on Twitter, Messenger and WhatsApp. KLM receives over 130.000 mentions via social media per week.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is cropping up in more and more articles and news stories these days. In August, Microsoft replaced mobility with AI as one of its top priorities. This came on the heels of the company's acquisitions of AI startups Maluuba and SwiftKey and the establishment of a formal AI and research group. These moves are an effort to position the company to be a leader in this up-and-coming field. But as early as April 2016, Google predicted a shift from a mobile-first to an AI-first world.
New Study Explores Public Reactions to AI - DZone AI
As with so many new technologies, AI has struggled to contain the hype surrounding it in recent years, with stories of the upcoming job apocalypse abound. Understanding the true state of affairs has been muddied by the fact that seemingly venerable institutions such as the University of Oxford have been cheerleaders in chief in stoking up fears. A recent paper from PwC set out to examine not only how AI is being used today, but how both businesses and consumers feel about the technology. Whilst the rhetoric surrounding AI suggests it is the kind of violent change that is impossible to ignore, the authors suggest instead that it's likely to be a much subtler shift in technologies. The study revealed that most of the public is broadly supportive of the benefits AI can bring to their lives.
A robot arm is Prague's latest star DJ
Never mind the debate over whether digital or vinyl is better for DJs -- the real question is whether or not a human should be there in the first place. Prague's Karlovy Lazne club has started employing an automotive robot arm as one of its DJs after its management challenged a robotics company to make it happen. The bot uses custom software to pick songs, and grabs CDs with its pincers to queue up tracks. It can dance and even scratch records. That'd make it more involved in the mix than some DJs we've seen.

But these expeditions are discovering new ways that man and machine can cooperate.
