Artificial intelligence will soon help paramedics recognize heart attacks

When someone goes into cardiac arrest, "the chance of survival decreases about 10 percent with each minute," said Adele Peters at Fast Company . Time is of the essence. Recognizing that the patient has actually entered cardiac arrest -- the first step in treatment -- is difficult, particularly if the symptoms are being "relayed by a panicked friend or relative." In Denmark, emergency dispatchers "now have help from AI." When someone calls for an ambulance, an AI assistant called Corti transcribes the conversation, using machine learning "to analyze the words and other clues in the background," like someone gasping for breath, that point to a heart attack diagnosis.


Semantic Interpolation in Implicit Models

In implicit models, one often interpolates between sampled points in latent space. As we show in this paper, care needs to be taken to match-up the distributional assumptions on code vectors with the geometry of the interpolating paths. Otherwise, typical assumptions about the quality and semantics of in-between points may not be justified. Based on our analysis we propose to modify the prior code distribution to put significantly more probability mass closer to the origin. As a result, linear interpolation paths are not only shortest paths, but they are also guaranteed to pass through high-density regions, irrespective of the dimensionality of the latent space. Experiments on standard benchmark image datasets demonstrate clear visual improvements in the quality of the generated samples and exhibit more meaningful interpolation paths.

Medopad: UK AI healthcare startup in major China deals - Verdict

The artificial intelligence (AI) healthcare startup Medopad has announced over ยฃ100m in trade deals with Chinese companies, including Tencent. Medopad's chief executive Dan Vahdat accompanied the UK prime minister Theresa May on a visit to China this week. Other business bosses visiting China with May included Jessica Butcher, co-founder of augmented reality (AR) startup Blippar and Nikhil Rathi, the chief executive of the London Stock Exchange. Medopad creates remote patient monitoring apps, and uses mobile technology and advanced analytics to deliver efficient care to patients. The company has signed 15 trade deals with Chinese organisations that will see it advance the use of AI in healthcare platforms across China.


Element AI opens London office to focus on building ethical AI

Montreal-based Element AI has expanded to London, UK. Dr. Julien Cornebise, a former DeepMind scientist, will lead the lab as director of research. Cornebiese was an early employee of Deepmind before it was acquired by Google in 2012. He created and led the Health Applied Research Team, and has been working with Amnesty International since he left DeepMind in 2016. The company says that it's focusing on'AI for good' through this office, while also expanding its network of researchers, scientists, and the private and public sector.

Five nightclubs and bars in Bournemouth are now accepting the app as ID. After downloading, all you have to do is scan both your face and your passport (or driver's license), and then take your phone on a night out.

Vid Researchers have taught a drone to fly autonomously through the streets of Zรผrich, Switzerland, by using a simple neural network. As tech companies toy with the idea of using mini-drones for delivery, monitoring buildings, or surveillance, then figuring out how to fly them without human control is vital if sales are to scale up. A paper published in the IEEE Robotics and Automation journal (here's a free pre-print version) shows how AI can help make that process easier. Known as DroNet, the convolutional neural network has eight layers and is much smaller and less complex than other architectures. It works by examining images from a camera, and produces two outputs: a steering angle so it can hover and skirt around obstacles, and a collision probability so it knows whether or not it's likely to bump into stuff, and take appropriate action.

An emotional investment in the Voynich manuscript offers little in the way of return. For hundreds of years, this 15th-century document full of indecipherable writing and cryptic illustrations has sat dark and inscrutable. Attempts to figure out its code tend to be swiftly debunked by the scholarly community, whether they're as sensible-seeming as "It's a woman's health manual!" or as outlandish as "I think an alien did it." Alan Turing and the Bletchley Park team's attempts to decode it were unsuccessful. Now, at the University of Alberta, Canada, researchers have taken a new tack to try to illuminate the manuscript, named for 19th-century Polish bookseller Wilfrid Voynich.

Knowledge bases (KBs) of real-world facts about entities and their relationships are useful resources for a variety of natural language processing tasks. However, because knowledge bases are typically incomplete, it is useful to be able to perform knowledge base completion or link prediction, i.e., predict whether a relationship not in the knowledge base is likely to be true. This article serves as a brief overview of embedding models of entities and relationships for knowledge base completion, summarizing up-to-date experimental results on standard benchmark datasets FB15k, WN18, FB15k-237, WN18RR, FB13 and WN11.
