A record-setting Russian spacewalk ended with a critical antenna facing the wrong way outside the International Space Station. Cosmonauts Aleksandr Misurkin, 40, and Anton Shkaplerov, 45, had to venture outside to swap out an old comms module with a new communications rod. But when they installed the antenna, designed to improve comms with Russia's Mission Control in Moscow, it was left facing 180 degrees from its intended position. The trouble arose toward the end of a spacewalk lasting more than eight hours - the longest ever by Russians and the fifth longest overall. Nasa's Mission Control has reported the antenna is still working, but Russian space officials are now assessing whether the device needs re-positioning.

In the United Kingdom, for example, Priors Court school for children and young adults with autism has been using an interactive humanoid robot, named Steve, to help pupils develop their social skills. With no facial expressions or tone in its voice, many of the severely autistic children are able to interact with the robot more easily than a human teacher. "It can engage children with communication problems, providing a tool for teachers to reach these children in a way that was not previously possible," says Carl Clement, founder of Emotion Robotics, the technology company that programmed the robot.

FOR the moment at least, automation is occurring all too slowly. The displacement of workers by machines ought to be bringing on a consistent rise in productivity and a faster growing economy. This is not happening in the US, Europe and Japan as well as in most parts of the world, including Malaysia – all being persistently disappointed with the outcomes. Experts warn that rapid advances in robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) could destroy millions of jobs and pose a "Terminator" style threat to human life as we know it. However unnerving the prospect, present day limitations of AI appear all too evident.

Back in September 2017, NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens told the NHS Health and Care Innovation Expo that major artificial intelligence (AI) innovations were in the pipeline in the NHS. He said that AI and machine learning is being, and will be, used in areas such as dermatology and pathology to improve clinical care. Efficiencies have never been more necessary. However, according to some, the sector has been slow to catch up with AI's benefits. Dr Panos Constantinides, associate professor of information systems at Warwick Business School and a digital technology researcher, says: "Unlike in other sectors, where companies such as Amazon and Google have been able to use AI in combination with data on online user behaviour to make recommendations on future user choices, the highly regulated healthcare industry does not grant easy access to patient data. Maintaining the security and confidentiality of patient data is a key priority in most countries."

The fast-changing, uncertain and ambiguous environments that organisations operate in today, requires organisations to re-think all their internal business processes and customer touch points. In addition, due to the availability of emerging (information) technologies such as big data, blockchain and artificial intelligence, it has become easier for startups to compete with existing organisations. Often these startups are more flexible and agile than Fortune 1000 companies and they can become a significant threat if not paid attention to. Therefore, focusing purely on the day-to-day operation is simply not enough and organisations have to become innovative and adaptive to change if they wish to remain competitive. The key characteristic of these new startups is that they are, at its core, a data company, regardless of the product or service they offer.
