UK Combats ISIS Videos With AI Technology That Detects Propaganda

Britain's Home Office unveiled a tool Tuesday that algorithmically detects ISIS propaganda videos on small video hosting sites. The technology, developed by ASI data science, is designed to detect and remove videos that have been created by ISIS. Thousands of hours of ISIS video content was analyzed in order to "teach" the software's artificial intelligence what to look out for. The program looks for certain cues, but much of the proprietary information wasn't released for security reasons. The British government said that the technology was developed in order to prevent smaller video content publishers without large budgets from inadvertently spreading ISIS content.

The programme aims to produce AI engineers with a highly relevant skillset in AI topics. Students will learn how to use and develop intelligent computer systems that can learn from experience, recognise patterns in vast amounts of data and reason strategically in complex decision-making situations. The programme content will deliver a comprehensive range of topics integral to the study of AI. These include machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, optimisation, anomaly detection and big data processing to name but a few. The programme will start in September 2018 producing the first AI graduates in 2019.


Cognitive Science in the era of Artificial Intelligence: A roadmap for reverse-engineering the infant language-learner

During their first years of life, infants learn the language(s) of their environment at an amazing speed despite large cross cultural variations in amount and complexity of the available language input. Understanding this simple fact still escapes current cognitive and linguistic theories. Recently, spectacular progress in the engineering science, notably, machine learning and wearable technology, offer the promise of revolutionizing the study of cognitive development. Machine learning offers powerful learning algorithms that can achieve human-like performance on many linguistic tasks. Wearable sensors can capture vast amounts of data, which enable the reconstruction of the sensory experience of infants in their natural environment. The project of 'reverse engineering' language development, i.e., of building an effective system that mimics infant's achievements appears therefore to be within reach. Here, we analyze the conditions under which such a project can contribute to our scientific understanding of early language development. We argue that instead of defining a sub-problem or simplifying the data, computational models should address the full complexity of the learning situation, and take as input the raw sensory signals available to infants. This implies that (1) accessible but privacy-preserving repositories of home data be setup and widely shared, and (2) models be evaluated at different linguistic levels through a benchmark of psycholinguist tests that can be passed by machines and humans alike, (3) linguistically and psychologically plausible learning architectures be scaled up to real data using probabilistic/optimization principles from machine learning. We discuss the feasibility of this approach and present preliminary results.


'Star Trek Discovery' failed to do what good sci-fi does

This article contains mild spoilers for the first season of'Star Trek Discovery'. At its best, science fiction does more than just entertain, or ensure its cliffhanger is strong enough that you come back next week. The cool spaceships and robots are just the framework through which we explore the anxieties and morals of our society at large. And we're at such a febrile point in history that we need sci-fi to ground us in what's coming in the not-too-distant future. I've been preaching patience for a while now, but I don't think that I can defend Star Trek Discovery any further.

LifeArc, the UK-based medical research charity, and the Milner Therapeutics Institute at Cambridge University have formed an alliance to use artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify and validate new drug targets in immuno-oncology and respiratory diseases. Cutting-edge machine learning approaches will be developed, validated and integrated into drug discovery processes to identify novel therapeutic targets, stratify patient populations and predict efficacy of new and existing drugs. Data generated will enhance the design of key experiments to validate and prioritise targets. Scientists involved in the project will be co-located at LifeArc and Milner Therapeutics to take full advantage of both environments. Professor Tony Kouzarides (pictured), director of the Milner Therapeutics Institute said: "We are delighted to be working closely with LifeArc in applying artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches to drug discovery. "There is a lot of interest in these methods for the potential to benefit patients.

We hear much about artificial intelligence these days and the threats it might hold for our future (and little about the opportunities). However, like the most pernicious threats facing the world; global warming, resource depletion, the destruction of natural habitats it's all a few decades off so why, some short-sighted observers might say, worry? However, forget maybe the threat of artificial intelligence, how about the nearer term threat caused by the reluctance of our political elite to apply their intelligence (it must be there?). Even by the usual standards of politics recent events across the Western World seem breathtakingly disappointing. I woke up last weekend.

The lost settlements of one of Scotland's most visited landscapes, infamous for the worst murders of the clan era, are to be traced by archaeologists for the first time. Glencoe was the scene of a massacre of the MacDonald clan, which saw more than 30 members of the kinship group slain exactly 362 years ago today. Their murders were ordered by the state after the clan chief tried but failed to meet a deadline to pledge allegiance to King William II. Experts hope to uncover some of the six settlements that are believed to have existed in the area in 1692, when the brutal attack took place. UK unveils extremism blocking tool

The UK government has unveiled a tool it says can accurately detect jihadist content and block it from being viewed. Home Secretary Amber Rudd told the BBC she would not rule out forcing technology companies to use it by law. Ms Rudd is visiting the US to meet tech companies to discuss the idea, as well as other efforts to tackle extremism. Thousands of hours of content posted by the Islamic State group was run past the tool, in order to "train" it to automatically spot extremist material. The government provided ยฃ600,000 of public funds towards the creation of the tool by an artificial intelligence company based in London.

LG Electronics will introduce the first of a suite of AI technologies for its smartphones at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The new technology will be featured in the 2018 version of the LG V30, LG's most advanced flagship smartphone to date. LG spent more than a year researching how AI should be implemented in smartphones, long before announcing LG ThinQ at CES 2018. This research focused primarily on making AI-based solutions with the objective to deliver a unique and more intuitive user experience, focusing on the camera and voice recognition. The result is a suite of AI technologies that is aligned closely with the needs and usage behavior of today's users.
