Prioritized Sweeping Neural DynaQ with Multiple Predecessors, and Hippocampal Replays

During sleep and awake rest, the hippocampus replays sequences of place cells that have been activated during prior experiences. These have been interpreted as a memory consolidation process, but recent results suggest a possible interpretation in terms of reinforcement learning. The Dyna reinforcement learning algorithms use off-line replays to improve learning. Under limited replay budget, a prioritized sweeping approach, which requires a model of the transitions to the predecessors, can be used to improve performance. We investigate whether such algorithms can explain the experimentally observed replays. We propose a neural network version of prioritized sweeping Q-learning, for which we developed a growing multiple expert algorithm, able to cope with multiple predecessors. The resulting architecture is able to improve the learning of simulated agents confronted to a navigation task. We predict that, in animals, learning the world model should occur during rest periods, and that the corresponding replays should be shuffled.

That risk engine takes in data from many attributes of the device (software configuration, operating system version, etc.), in addition to benign attributes of consumer behavior (for example, how a mobile device is held when texting and location of the device), and matches these attributes against a device signature and a model based on previous behavior. The risk engine binds a consumer to one or more of the devices they typically use.

Facial recognition and machine learning programs have officially been democratized, and of course the internet is using the tech to make porn. As first reported by Motherboard, people are now creating AI-assisted face-swap porn, often featuring a celebrity's face mapped onto a porn star's body, like Gal Gadot's likeness in a clip where she's supposedly sleeping with her stepbrother. But while stopping these so-called deepfakes has challenged Reddit, Pornhub, and other communities, GIF-hosting company Gfycat thinks it's found a better answer. While most platforms that police deepfakes rely on keyword banning and users manually flagging content, Gfycat says it's figured out a way to train an artificial intelligence to spot fraudulent videos. The technology builds on a number of tools Gfycat already used to index the GIFs on its platform.

Digital reconstructions reveal the Italian Saint had a strong jawline and died a young man when he was killed on February 14, 269 AD. The new scans contradict previous reconstructions of the Patron Saint of Love, which have typically suggested he was an older man of affluence. The real face of Saint Valentine may have finally been revealed thanks to new 3D scans of the Patron Saint of Love's skull. Little is known of the clergyman, but it is believed he was executed after he secretly defied a Roman Emperor's strict ban on marriage, helping soldiers to pair off with their wives illegally.

We live in a world where productivity, a key pillar of long-term economic growth, has crumbled. An image of a single atom of the metal strontium suspended in electric fields has won a prestigious science photography prize. David Nadlinger's photo, Single Atom In An Ion Tap, was captured through the window of a vacuum chamber in an Oxford University laboratory, using an ordinary digital camera on a long exposure shot. Two metal electrodes, two millimetres apart, held the strontium almost motionless as it was illuminated with a blue-violet-coloured laser. The image beat more than 100 entries to claim first place overall in the 2018 Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) science photography competition. Mr Nadlinger said: 'The idea of being able to see a single atom with the naked eye had struck me as a wonderfully direct and visceral bridge between the minuscule quantum world and our macroscopic reality.


Champions League live streams to become harder to access as UEFA obtains blocking order

UEFA has obtained a high court injunction that will make it harder for people in the UK to stream Champions League matches for free. Tne order allows it to tell the UK's biggest internet service providers (ISPs) to block any servers that are being used to distribute live footage of Champions League and Europa League matches. The orders can be made by UEFA – and acted upon by ISPs – as matches are being played, and the injunction covers all Champions League and Europa League games played between 13 February 2018 and 26 May 2018 – the day of the Champions League final. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. The loving feeling that abounds in February, and the sadness it provokes in many single people, are being exploited by fraudsters who use it to steal people's money and infect their computers. Hundreds of millions of fake emails are being sent out that appear as if they are coming from admirers. But if people follow them up they'll just be subject to scams and frauds, or being sent viruses. Home Office unveils AI program to tackle Isis online propaganda

Tool can detect 94% of Isis propaganda with a 99.99% success rate in tests An artificial intelligence program that can detect Islamic State propaganda online with a 94% success rate has been developed, the Home Office has announced. The technology could stop the majority of Isis videos from reaching the internet by analysing the audio and images of a video file during the uploading process, and rejecting extremist content. The tool, which has been developed in partnership by the Home Office and ASI Data Science, will be made available to all internet platforms, although many major tech companies such as Facebook and Twitter already use similar technology on their own websites. The tool is aimed at tackling extremist content on smaller platforms like Vimeo, Telegraph and pCloud, which have seen a large rise in Isis propaganda. The terror group has used 400 different websites to upload their content last year, research has found.
